SOLVED. YA/ Childrens Fantasy series where the main character's friend dies in a swamp. [s]

The book I am looking for is a fantasy novel. I remember that there was a sort of steampunk feel about it and the front cover looks a lot like the hound of Rowan. I read it around 2012-2016. I remember that the main character's friend dies by drowning in a swamp somewhere in the series. I also remember the books being more than 200 pages long.
