► UNSOLVED: One specific book > Sci/fi or fantasy maybe? Something like an apocalypse happens and only a few people made it. They travel around finding new survivors to start over. It was a very large paperback

Linda (vwbug1968) | 8 comments I’m looking for a book I read years ago. A very large many page paperback. There was something that happened and only a few people lived through it. They traveled to find any other survivors in order to start new life. It was a very strange book but would love to read it again.

Alan (alanjc) | 482 comments Swan Song by Robert McCammon is a moderately massive apocalyptic / post apocalyptic novel focusing on the (comparatively) small number of survivors of a nuclear war. It is also fairly old.

Andy Phillips | 240 comments There are quite a few books like this, but there's a good chance that someone will know it. One popular one is The Stand. Do you remember what type of disaster it was? Do you remember anything that happened, which country it was set in, or anything about the characters?

Emergence by David R. Palmer is one with a similar theme.
The protagonist is a young girl (11 years old) who's a member of an emerging new homosapiens subspecies. She and a few others travel looking for survivors after a plague wipes out most of Homo Sapiens.

They find survivors but learn that the plague was a deliberately released weapon and there is another threat they need to stop - a strontium bomb in an orbitting satellite, which is due to explode and render the planet uninhabitable for 200 years.

The protag is the only person small enough to be able to reach the bomb on the ship so goes up with a mission to disarm it. They are betrayed but successful, and she ends up returning to earth in a ship without adequate heat protection and is badly burned.

She also has a telepathic connection with a parrot.
