Read probably between 1970 and 1975. Set in early to mid 20th century. Starts with a train journey when the boy has to leave his boarding school because his parents have divorced and financial circumstances have changed. Arrives at the house of his relative and noticed that the walls are round and the furniture has been made to fit. Upset by the change in his life at first and feeling lost in his new environment he begins to love and feel healed by the work and the place in time.

But no unfortunately not.
This sounds really familiar, I think I read it too. Was there something about a central heater(?) fireplace or something that went up through the storeys of the house?
I don't remember that specifically but it sounds quite likely. Do you remember or have any hint of the boy's name?
Was the boy a teenager or a younger child?

Was it possibly something by Henry Williamson (or his approximate style), or was it definitely more juvenile?
Thanks for this suggestion. I've only read Tarka the Otter but looking at the synopses of several of his other books they don't seem to fit the bill. It was perhaps deep ruralism but I remember it as a simple story of the boy's experiences in the countryside and yes I would say more juvenile. I can't remember the boy's name but there are few possibilities that I consider - Ralph, Richard, Philip, Patrick, William,,,,,
