Serge (dinara2015) | 60 comments We can all agree that one author should have a single profile listing all the works; that is the purpose of a database. It can be a profile in English, although it is somewhat doubtful for authors who have never been translated. The problem is that many authors have variants in spelling and that many languages do not use the Latin alphabet. Take a widely translated author like Чехов (Chekhov). We have a profile in French Anton Tchekhov with 56 works, a profile in German Anton Tschechow with 68 works, and numerous in other languages, none listing all the works. To circumvent this, some works list several variants, but that makes it look like they have several authors.

What is needed is a Wikipedia-style redirection pointing to a single profile with all the works, so that all the searches, in whatever language and whatever variant, point to that profile for each author. The same applies to work listings.

I will not address Contact Us because I do not want to communicate by e-mail. I have no problem with internal GR messages. If anyone decides to forward this, thank you.

Authors with profiles in multiple languages can certainly have notes in their bio section pointing to the other profiles.
Most works in the public domain have so many editions being imported all the time that it would be nearly impossible for someone to make sure the editions in other languages also have the English name attached.

Editions in one language need only have the English "umbrella" name and the name in the other language. It would be confusing to have authors in many languages attached to an edition in just one language (not sure if that is one of the things you meant).

Ideas for new features can be submitted through the Ideas section of the Help page.
