Theresa | 15655 comments It's tuesday (I think!) and I thought it would be nice if I posted a new Kaffeeklatsch! Of course the one everyone is currently posting and responding to can continue on.

Just want to mention how terrific a time BookConcierge and I had on our Road Trip through the Dakotas (and bits of Montana and Wyoming as well as Minnesota and Wisconsin). It was enriched by adding meals with Doughgirl and RobinP to the trip. That's a warning to all that if on future trips I find myself within a couple hour drive of where you live, I'll be arranging a meet!

One of the highlights of the trip, aside from Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, etc. -- the more off the beaten tourist path stop -- was Fargo, ND. We stayed at a restored modernized historic hotel in downtown Fargo, the Hotel Donaldson, which had a level of comfort even luxury that we really enjoyed after being on the road for ten days or more. It was only one night but I'd stay there again for a few days - and since it's having its restaurants and lounges renovated, might have to go back. Downtown feels western, a bit vintage, yet still modern. We had a marvelous meal in another fine hotel a block or so away - Rosewild in the Jasper Hotel. Best of all, we learned from our waiter that the orginal wood chipper from the movie Fargo was on display in the Visitor Center. I LOVE that movie and insisted we back track (that center is on western edge of town and we were headed east). Not only did they have the original wood chipper, and it was autographed by the Coen Brothers!, they have other memorabilia from the show on display. LOVED it!

Yes, I have a wacky sense of humor. There are plenty of pictures on my FB page -- I'll friend any PBT member who requests it.

We also discovered that PBT members give the best recommendations -- RobinP recommended the superb Norske Nook Restaurant and Bakery in Madison, WI which had such fabulous breakfast and PIE! Doughgirl Lynne gave us Chevy's Tex Mex near Mall of America. And RobinP and BookConcierge took me to the sublime indie bookstore in Milwaukee, Boswell's Books. What more can a girl ask for?

In case you are all wondering, the only audiobook we listened to on the trip was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and we did not finish it - it's quite long and sometimes we listened to music.

Doughgirl is off on her mystery author tour of England and I personally can't wait to hear how it is.

As we all need some cheerful upbeat news, any cute pet or kid stories and updates? Anyone have dress-up plans for Halloween-related events?

@JoAnne - how's your library book sales doing?

Amy | 12953 comments Theresa, I want my turn. We should actually plan our NYC dinner and show night, of course with Sally, and whoever else wishes to join. I will pick a night and come into the City. I was just waiting to plan when my kid finishes his college apps, and we are close.... My driving whip is almost out of force and the wind is blowing the right way. Start thinking about what show(s) you most want us to see!

🤗

Well I have had meals in NYC with you and SallyS individually.

I have not checked what is showing, but can comeup with suggestions. Of course. Plus my favorite theater area restaurant, classic Italian, ultimately survived the pandemic!

Amy | 12953 comments There’s an Italian restaurant that we now love that’s on 34th and park. We’ve eaten there twice and think it’s fabulous!

Sue | 2733 comments I've been away a bit lately and I'm just catching up on the epic road trip. It sounds like it was wonderful!

message 6: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments Oh, we DID laugh - A LOT!

And Theresa didn't really have to twist my arm too much to back track to the visitor center in Fargo so she could get a picture with the infamous wood chipper! Though I do admit that by that point in the trip I was frequently stating adamantly NO backtracking! ... Forward! But she bribed me with a Moon Pie, so I caved.

message 7: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments Oh ... and I picked up the Harry Potter audio at my library on the way to take Theresa to the airport for her flight back to NYC. I'll have it finished this week.

message 8: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments I had HP Deathly Hallows on my DNF shelf because I got sidetracked several months ago from my re-read of the entire series. I have restored it to currently reading status (I am on page 124), and will finish it this week. My audio version is in the box with my winter gear that I shipped myself that should arrive before end of week.

Theresa | 15655 comments Yes, amazing how a Moon Pie or even a bag of Dots Pretzels (made in ND) can persuade.

We also have to thank JoAnne for the mission she assigned me - to fed ex her a cowboy! Tessa and I took the mission seriously. You can follow our efforts in my FB postings.

The trip was truly wonderful. Seeing Mt. Rushmore has been a dream of mine since I was very young. Not only did it not disappoint, it far exceeded my expectations. I encourage any thinking of some kind of road trip in that area to do it. We are happy to share our travel details.

Karin | 9248 comments All these great places you have been seeing--cool! Going off the beaten track can lead to fabulous experiences. I tend to prefer that because it is usually more authentic plus you can see some amazing things. Of course, I do love seeing the big sites at off times when it's not so crowded

Speaking of NYC, my son pointed out how different your skyline appeared than it did 5 years ago due to a handful of new buildings, etc. He flew threw La Guardia. This leads to my cheerful kid stuff--my son is home for a few days over his break, but was delayed because he got a hoity-toity (for a student) gig with 4 other students playing at a late governor's memorial service in Pittsburgh so he was excited and was paid much better than student rates--plus they've been asked to go back for Easter (a popular time for brass players, esp trumpeters.)

In the meantime, though, he is working on two long midterms.

Karin | 9248 comments For you opera buffs (here's looking at you, Theresa), another fun bit of news that is local--my new voice teacher is part of the Boston Lyric Opera company. It turns out I saw her in 2006 in her first performance with them playing Anina in La Traviata. She is a dramatic coloratura who played Violetta in La Traviata in an immersive opera with a different company last fall and has a lovely voice.

Theresa | 15655 comments All - I just have to share!

Have had a banner work week.

Monday - while I was flying home - we finally received a court order to proceed to sale in a tricky partition case of a condominium destroyed by a fire. Finally after 3 years we can move on to the next stage, sale of the damaged property!

Wednesday I had an oral argument on a motion to dismiss made by defendant in a brokerage case. It was a ridiculous suit, poorly pled, but you never know how things will go. I won dismissal of the suit! This is huge because I am not a litigator --- and I did all the papers and filings myself, something I've never done before.

This old dog is not too old to learn new tricks.

An hour after receiving that decision on Wed., I got an email from insurance defense counsel that our motion to dismiss in another nuisance suit was granted and the time to appeal (30 days after entry of judgment/order) had expired.

A banner week for a lawyer!!!!!

I also feel so much more energetic, mentally especially, and upbeat. I was really beaten down and mentally exhausted. Hours of driving with my road trip twin BookConcierge, listening to Jim Dale read Harry Potter, was so clearly the vacation I needed with little to no stress on my poor overworked brain.

Although, I had to leap back into work a day sooner than my away message indicated so I only found time to unpack today.

Robin P | 5798 comments Congratulations on all your success, Theresa, you obviously deserve it. And kudos for taking that great vacation.

I went to my daughter’s place the day after seeing you and BC, and on the way there I started freaking out about all the people in the restaurant and if I could be exposing my daughter to covid when she has no immune system. I decided to wear a mask around her and tested myself 4 days in a row, all ok. I had missed the surprise visit you planned for me on the way out so I really didn’t want to miss this one. One of very few things I have done for myself lately, and I appreciate you both making it possible. Eventually I am going to get to NYC!

What a great week!

I had a lovely time letting my son treat me to see Mahler's 6th symphony at the Boston Symphony Matinee. The largest ovation went to the principal trumpeter, Thomas Rolfs. My son not only likes Mahler (one of the first to really feature many instruments and do it well) but he is taking a class on Mahler Symphonies at CMU so it couldn't have been better timed. He flies back to Pittsburgh tomorrow.

My son is a 4th generation (or perhaps even 5th) Mahler fan--my late grandfather, dad and I came first.

I too enjoy Mahler - though not his song cycles so much.

My first real exposure to a Mahler symphony was in 1974 - or possibly 1973, December, NY Philharmonic conducted by visiting conducter Loren Maazel, in town with the Cleveland which was performing at Carnegie. A Barnard classmate organized it because we could get student seats for $2.00 and she loved Mahler. I was swept away.

What a wonderful visit you have had with your son, Karin.

I know you will get here.

I am so glad you were able to join us - and we got a bookstore visit in too! The restaurant was busy but where we were seated to eat was not really too crowded and it seemed open with high ceilings.

I do think acting on the side of caution around your daughter is just common sense.

I'm glad we were able to meet in person. I also wondered about all the people ... not so much when we were seated, but in the waiting area. Glad to hear that you continued to test negative. AND more importantly, that you were able to spend time with your daughter without exposing her.

I appreciated that you both put on masks in the waiting area specifically for my benefit!

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments I kinda got out of the habit of wearing my mask during our road trip. The locales we were traversing were always mask-averse, even during the height of the pandemic. We were outside most of the time (or just the two of us in the car), with the exception of dining and gift shops. Most of the venues were not very crowded. And we had both made sure we had the latest bivalent vax (plus flu) before traveling.

I'm getting back in the habit now, though.

message 27: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments Same here. Pretty much only places that could be called crowded were restaurants and we would not have been wearing one while eating anyway. Mt. Rushmore Gift Shop and Wall Drugs could be called exceptions.

But here in NYC wearing masks has dropped significantly. We will see if that changes as numbers start to rise again with the 2 new variants we are seeing.

Sue | 2733 comments Here in Arizona, almost no masks anywhere.

I had blood drawn earlier this week and wore a mask to enter the medical building. I saw very few people wearing masks and none were required.

Medical offices here are still requiring masks. Or so they say ... but there is no longer an official "checker" in the lobby to ensure compliance. Just a box on a table with extra masks available for use.

Booknblues | 12144 comments Medical and Vet offices require masks in CA still.

Had the latest booster on Friday, the easiest yet.

I loved Mahler's choral stuff when I was a teen, even when I was rebelling and listening to stuff he hates like rock, etc--at least what my dad had, which included Kindertotenlieder. Like my dad, I enjoy choral music.

When I was flying this summer, we had to wear a mask on Air Canada to and from BC--Canada still requires them when flying although obviously you can eat the meals--but it's optional on American domestic flights so most people weren't wearing them.

message 33: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments I have continued to wear a mask everywhere inside that is not my house (unless eating at a restaurant, of course).

I was surprised to learn that my dentist no longer does the checklist with all the questions. I assume they had required a mask (at least in the lobby) before, but there were people there last week without, so presumably no longer.

My ophthalmologist - a few weeks ago - was still going through the checklist and requiring masks.

I have an ultrasound tomorrow (wish me luck with all the water!!! Not looking forward to it). They haven't told me that I need to wear a mask, but I will, of course, wear one. So, I'm assuming, once again, it's not required since I wasn't told to wear one?

My follow-up appt for my kidney stone is Nov 1, but it's over the phone, so no extra precautions needed there). (This is why tomorrow's ultrasound.)

I think the requirement on flights has since ended. I think.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12640 comments Had my bivalent booster last week-no reaction except a sore arm. Mask wearing is rising here as the fall weather sets in

message 39: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5798 comments I had a brief time of feeling a little chilled/odd the evening after getting the bivalent shot. The other 4 - absolutely no side effects.

I will be continuing to wear a mask in stores indefinitely. With small groups I have been leaving it off, but with winter coming, and spending more time with my daughter, I will probably put it on for everything indoors.
