Nominations are now open until October 24th for the December 2022 Open Pick.

Nominating guidelines:
- Fiction (original & translation, if applicable) first published between January 1, 2000 and December 1, 2021. For translations the latter date must be an English edition.
- One nomination per person (please do not nominate or vote for a book unless you are certain you can read and discuss if it wins)
- A book this group has not yet read (see the group bookshelf or the Index of all Group Reads here)
- A book that is not better suited to the wild card (genre) category

If you are nominating, please begin your post by stating "I nominate [name with hyperlink to book]"

The discussion will start on December 1st

Emmeline | 191 comments I nominate The Atlantic Sound by Caryl Phillips, published way back in 2000.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I nominate Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan, which was first published on Oct 21, 2021. I've read it and a reread during the December holidays seems appropriate. And who knows, perhaps it will win the Booker in 41 minutes from now.

I didn't know that the Bookers were being announced today until I just read your post. Also, "Her Majesty The Queen Consort" has to be the suckiest title in the history of royal titles.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments Better than Her Royal Highness the Princess Consort!

Erika, unless they have changed the rules, Dinosaur would have had too recent a publishing date. You might suggest an alternate, in case that is the case.

Nominated books must have been originally published (in any language) in 2000 or later, and also have to have been published in English at least one year prior to the discussion date.

I will nominate Chouette Claire Oshetsky. Most of us probably read this when it came out, but it might be fun to reread it and discuss it in December.

Plenty of time to pick another!

Thanks Sam. You are right, Dinosaurs is not eligible yet.

How about your thoughts on Chouette? Do you think it a fair choice or would it be too personal for the author to see it discussed since she is a group member?

I believe it was already discussed in another group and she even pitched in.

Thanks Emily, that would probably be Newest Literary fiction to which I don't belong. Since many of the members are the same, I see no reason to repeat the discussion here and withdraw the nomination.

The poll is now up here, and will be open until November 2nd (sorry for the delay). I think we are down to just the first two nominations.
