Mark Anyone have suggestions for fantasy based on ancient or medieval Asia? Perhaps something like Guy G. Kay's recent novels?
Thank you for your suggestions.

Geoff (geoffgreer) Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was might fit the bill. It was a S&L pick a couple of years ago.

Sky | 665 comments Ken Liu's The Grace of Kings is coming out April 7.

Besides Journey to the West you might also enjoy Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Vol. 1. It's more historical epic than fantasy though

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments The Lord of the Sands of Time by Issui Ogawa
Dragon Sword and Wind Child by Noriko Ogiwara
The Book of Heroes by Miyuki Miyabe

And if you're willing to try manga, there's

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic by Shinobu Ohtaka
A Bride's Story by Kaoru Mori (okay, it's not fantasy or medieval, but 19th Century Central Asia definitely isn't the modern world)

Keidy | 525 comments The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo. It's not set in ancient China but it is set in the seventeenth century.

The latest Humble Book Bundle (Subterranean Press Bundle) has The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox, the omnibus which contains Bridge of Birds.

Looks like it goes for about three more days.

I got my signed ARC in the mail today (won it by emailing him when he said he was handing out ARCs!)..Just need to finish Gardens of the Moon so I can start.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I'm about halfway through my ARC. Enjoying it a lot. I hope they make an audiobook of it, I think it lends itself well to an audiobook.

Kevin | 701 comments The Eternal Sky trilogy (Range of Ghosts) by Elizabeth Bear is a fantasy based on the Mongol Empire.

I read several hundred pages of RoTK, but stalled under the weight of so many characters and events. I've read that the various translations vary in readability, and it's certainly a fascinating story, but I might need something more reader friendly. I appreciate the suggestion, though.

Mark The tricky part will be setting Erikson's epic aside to read something else. I found myself a citizen of the Malazan Empire for a while, and his world building can really absorb you.

message 16: by Mark (new)

Mark Thanks to everyone for all these suggestion. My Kindle is about to get flooded with samples. I'm especially excited because I haven't heard of several of the authors/works y'all mentioned.

Thanks!

Yeah, I've decided to do Malazan completely in print and forgo audio, so that means i'll have a few hours a day while commuting to listen to something else. But I know what you mean...I just finished GotM an hour ago, and am ready to jump into Deadhouse Gates, but my ARC of Grace of Kings is also print only!

Ernest Bramah wrote some books of stories set in classical China. Wallet of Kai Lung, Kai Lung's Golden Hours, and Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat should get you started. There are three more in the series.

Thanks, David! The first one is going right to my Kindle. I recall a college buddy of mine read stories about a doctor/kung fu artist in China. I don't recall the author, but Bramah's works sounds like similar fun.

John (johnred) The Tales of the Otori series is really good. "Across the Nightingale Floor" is the first one I believe.

Those do look cool. I remember when they first came out, but I forgot about them. Thanks.
