50.1 - Jen B's Task: Monopoly!

Monopoly is a classic board game in which players try to collect and build as many properties as they can so they can charge their fellow players "rent." The goal is to collect 2-3 of the same color properties to create a "monopoly."

Let's bend the rules and play with books!

Roll one six-sided die to determine your reading category. Roll only ONCE.
https://virtualdiceroll.com/1/en/one-die
Then, create your monopoly by reading three different books that share this connection.
The three books must total at least 750 pages.
No books with children, kids or related genres on the main book page may be used.
Books in the same series MAY be used for a roll of 2-6.
Required: State the number rolled.

Roll a 1: Author Name (first or last)
Read three books by three different authors who share the same first or last name. Spelling must match exactly. The name of all 3 authors must be in the same position for each author.
Required: State the name.

Roll a 2: Word in the title
Read three books whose titles share a common word of 4 or more letters. Words must match exactly. If plurals or possessives are used, the word must appear that way in all three titles. Subtitles are excluded.
Required: State the word.

Roll a 3: Token
Read three books that all have the same popular Monopoly token object on the cover from this list: Scottie dog/dog, top hat/hat, battleship/boat, racecar/car, horse & rider, train, thimble, shoe/shoes
Required: Include the cover and state the token.

Roll a 4: MPG
Read three books that share the same main page genre. The genres should appear the same way for all three books, such as standalone genre "Mystery" or embedded genre "Mystery > Cozy Mystery" on each of the traditional GR book pages,
or genres "Mystery" or "Cozy Mystery" on the beta GR book pages.
Required: State the MPG.

Roll a 5: Setting
Read three books that all have the same setting. For books set in the U.S., the books should be in the same U.S. state. If set in a country other than the U.S., the books should be set in the same country. If set in a place outside the world map, such as the Moon, Outer Space, or a fictional/fantasy setting, the three settings must match.
Required: State the setting. If setting is not obvious according to GR description or metadata, provide a reference.

Roll a 6: Year of publication
Read three books that were all FIRST published in the same year..
Required: State the year.

Robin P | 1609 comments Just wanted to congratulate Jen B on this clever task, which won in a landslide! (It's the one I voted for.) It's easy to understand but also has the fun element of chance.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 1555 comments I echo Robin, love this!

Now the bad news Jen-LOL. I keep switching between the old and new GR's and so I am not trusting the site for any information this season-Could you please verify that these books are all MPG History-so sorry for the list, but what I read depends on what I can get from my library

The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War
We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families
Invisible: The Forgotten Story of the Black Woman Lawyer Who Took Down America's Most Powerful Mobster
The Long Way Home
Facing the Mountain: A True Story of Japanese American Heroes in World War II

Thanks!

Julia (julia103) | 2717 comments I agree - this is a great task.

I rolled three (Monopoly tokens).

Is it ok to have different breeds of dogs on the covers? And is it ok to have more than one dog on a cover?

Outfoxed (Andy Carpenter, #14) by David Rosenfelt Dachshund Through the Snow (Andy Carpenter #20) by David Rosenfelt Santa's Little Yelpers (Andy Carpenter, #26) by David Rosenfelt

(I might pick different books in the series, but I'm pretty sure I've seen these three in my library.)

Yes, they all show up as MPG History for me :)

I think I still have the old version, because I have no idea what the new version is that people are talking about! :)

Yes to all the dogs! :)

Robin P | 1609 comments So for #4 or 5, they could be 3 books of the same series, right? For instance, mysteries all set in the same area. They don't have to be different authors?

message 13: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments Rolled a 4, so I don't forget.

I was actually hoping for a 2, but I think this might work out even better.

Yes. The only option that requires different authors is #1.

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Great task!

I rolled a 5 and have a question about setting
Does setting refer to location only or time period as well?
For example, if book #1 is UK in 2017 and book #2 is in 1820, itsthat OK or do all three have to be set in the same era?
Thanks!

It's just location, so different time periods are fine. Enjoy!

Lauren (laurenjberman) Thanks Jen!

message 18: by Bea (new)

Bea Rolled a 4. MPG. I am happy with my roll.

message 19: by Odette (last edited Oct 16, 2022 11:37PM) (new)

Odette (odman) Is it OK to use a book which I have alreadty read during this Fall Challenge, and have not claimed for another task?

Rolled a 4, which I am happy with - choice of mystery or historic fiction!

message 20: by Trish (last edited Oct 17, 2022 03:16AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments So, I also rolled a 4 for MPG.

Is just the top MPG fine - like Science Fiction? Or do you want us to delve down a bit? For example, given the current state of the world, I'm thinking these three, all of which are also marked as Science Fiction > Dystopia:

Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
The Testaments, Margaret Atwood
Upgrade, Blake Crouch

If you need the sub-MPGs, could you confirm all of the above for Science Fiction > Dystopia (for the first two, it's quite high, for Upgrade it's the bottom one listed)

Thanks.

message 23: by Bea (last edited Oct 23, 2022 04:47AM) (new)

Bea I'm going with Mystery>Cozy Mystery as I have a bunch of those to read for games this fall.

My top candidates:
Meet Your Baker
Just Desserts
Night of the Living Deed

EDIT: I have the new page now, so I double checked each of my books. All have both Mystery and Cozy Mystery listed. YAY!!!

Over de grens by Mechtild Borrmann

ForestGardenGal Rolled a 5.

You said books in a series is ok for a 5 roll, so
Practical Demonkeeping
The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove and
The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (the Pine Cove series books) by Christopher Moore, all set in the imaginary but identical setting of Pine Cove, California is Ok, right?
