Sam | 2 comments Fantasy fiction chapter book for children. Read between 2006-2011 in the UK. The book is about an orphan fairy who is taken in and looked after by the cook of the royal castle. In the castle lives the fairy? king and queen and their daughter princess bumblebee. Both the orphan fairy and the princess are preparing for an exam (some form of magical exam?) but the royal family are unaware that the orphan fairy is sitting the exam. The orphan fairy secretly listens in from the window of the library (she has wings) to the princess's tutored lessons. One day the king and queen are having a rose garden party so everyone is out in the garden. The orphan fairy tries to hide so no one can see her but in her attempt to do so falls and causes a scene. She has to explain herself to the king and queen and is allowed to sit in the library to listen in to the princess's lessons which the princess is not happy about. On the day of the exam, all the helpers and cook pitch and buy the orphan fairy a pencil with a range of lovely colours on it. To pick a colour the fairy has to tap twice on that colour. She goes to sit the exam and is working very hard, but all of a sudden all the ink vanishes off the page. The princess whispered a vanishing spell? The orphan fairy takes out her gifted pencil taps twice on lilac and finishes the paper. Think they both pass? and the result is something to do with wings!

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5548 comments I think this is Unicorn Dreams by Elizabeth Lindsay. It's the first book in the Silverlake Fairy School series. The main fairy is called Lila and the princess fairy is Princess Bee Balm. I couldn't find a Google Books preview but there is a copy on archive.org - here's the bit with the rainbow pencil during the exam:
Lila didn’t know what to do. Her thoughts raced as she looked at her blank scroll. Would there be time to write out the answers again? But what if the Princess kept making them disappear? Lila had to try; she couldn’t hand in a blank scroll. Perhaps, if she swapped the quill for the rainbow pencil, the Princess might not know how to magic away pencil writing. All shyness gone now, Lila put up her hand.
“Please,” she whispered to Mistress Pipit when the teacher came over. “Would it be all right if I used my colored pencil? My quill’s making a lot of blots.”
“I must check it for cheating charms,” said Mistress Pipit and held the pencil for a moment. “Yes, that’s fine, dear,” she said.
Gratefully, Lila took back the pencil and tapped the violet stripe.
