Suspenseful Science Fiction by Playwright. Spoiler ahead.

This book begins with a heavy rain on a small town followed by the disappearance of adults leaving several children behind. The setting takes place in a small town. In the end there is a cloud that holds the "souls" of those who have been taken. The book was written by a playwright and I unfortunately cannot recall his name. I read this book somewhere between 2005 and 2015. Thank you!
