I’m searching for the author and title of a book I read in the mid 2000s that was likely published in the early 2000s, when I was younger and reading through my mother’s adult romance books lol. I can remember most of the plot pretty well. The main character or heroine was a woman in her late twenties or early thirties named Aja who had a very traumatizing experience of witnessing her alcoholic/addicted father and her mother getting into a fight and her mother hitting her head and dying from the injury. She had a younger brother who developed major anger issues and a drinking problem that kept him from maintaining a stable roster spot in the NBA. He has a long term girlfriend and they ended up having a baby girl and after a fight where he was drunks he fears he has done the same thing his father did to his mother and takes his own life. They had a baby sister who ended up developmentally stunted after their mother’s death. The hero in the story was a news reporter or anchor named Charles. I’m pretty sure it was set in Texas because I remember Charles’ mother being from Galveston (not 100% positive), she was an older woman and extremely protective of her son as he was her only child and took a long while to warm up to Aja. Towards the end of the story, their father is released from prison and wants to reconnect with his children and while Aja has no interest in having a relationship with him she tolerates him because her sister seemingly has no recollection of what happened and is happy to be around him. It’s been bugging me that I can remember so much about the book but not the name or author! Thank you to anyone who can help 🤗
