Joshua | 1 comments Read this in High School which was between the years of 2007 - 2012. This IS NOT a book that would be found in schools nowadays.

The word "RED" comes to mind when thinking of the title. Book cover, to the best of my memory, showed a hooded figure in a forest in a cloak of red.

My memory of the book has it starting off with a hooded figure on the cover staking out a small village and approaching a wandering child. They ask the child about a boy in their village and the child plays coy. The hooded figure gives up and kills the child and starts massacring the village to find the boy.

The middle of the book escapes me entirely but i remember some crone debating on taking the childs seed while he slept so she can have a magical baby after finding out he doesn't have a navel. (I know, its ducked up)

End of the book, the misfits and the boy get surrounded and somehow activate a floating rock with the boys magic. Before they can escape, the boy gets captured by the bad guys ( a man and woman). They then proceed to kill and desecrate the boys body in order to "soak in the magic".

The misfits somehow find the rock still floating and get away to safety and are told their journey has just begun now that magic has started to once again spark in their the land.

The ending has always left an impact on me for how graphic is was and now that I am older, I long to revisit this if only I could learn the name of it.

Ayshe's suggestion of Dusk by Tim Lebbon sounds like your book:
https://books.google.com/books?id=stU... There are different cover images including Zmrok (Tales of Noreela, #1) by Tim Lebbon.

Kirkus Review:
Dark, gripping swords-and-sorcery noir, first in a promised fantasy series. The land of Noreela has a turbulent, violent history. After the Cataclysmic War, magic was banished from the land, and an order of demonic men known as Red Monks have made it their mission to see that it stays banished. Though they are a fearsome and deadly menace, they lurk in the shadows of myth and hearsay, used as boogiemen to scare children. Signs of impending conflict emerge when a Red Monk comes to a small village looking for a boy named Rafe Baburn, thought to be the conduit for magic. The entire village is slaughtered, but Rafe remains unfound. His only chance for survival lies with a group of unlikely heroes, including a falsely branded thief, a clever witch/prostitute and a brave young librarian...
Quote: "He has no navel."
