Hello Fellow Readers!

Preparations for 2023 have begun and we need your help to choose our next yearly theme! Throw your ideas down below! The nominations are open until October 31st. Then our mods will compile the suitable suggestions and create a poll so you will have the chance to vote for your favorite!

Rules
- You may either suggest one theme or second one theme! Give us your best idea to make it count!
- Themes must be nominated and seconded by a different member in order to get into the poll.
- Moderators reserve the right to modify, refine, or adjust themes as necessary. This isn't to restrict your creativity, just to make it more accessible and enjoyable for everyone!
- To keep the poll manageable, we may limit the total number of ideas

Good yearly themes are broad enough to be able to create quarterly and possibly monthly themes throughout the year. For example, given the nominations of "roses" and "flowers", we would choose the broader term "flowers" because it includes "roses". See the past themes below for an idea of what we're looking for. Themes used in the past are not eligible to be used again.

When submitting your nomination, feel free to explain how you see it expanded into challenges throughout the year. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Previous Themes
2017 - Around the World
2018 - Reading Through Time
2019 - Books to Stage & Screen
2020 - Myths, Legends & Fairy Tales
2021 - A Better World
2022 - Mysteries of the World

Valerie Reyes | 1142 comments Life on Earth and beyond is my suggestion.

Edited: or maybe Life is universal would work better.

message 3: by Susan (new)

Susan Gaines | 2 comments Nature and Science in Literature
A section on novels about (real) science and the natural world
A section on nature writing, with non-fiction and poetry
A section on popular non-fiction science books

I like Life on Earth. Could include novels with nature writing about birds etc, as well as poetry and nature-writing and even popular science non-fiction about origin of life, etc.

Lisa, rule #1 says you can suggest one theme or second one theme... not both. 🤷‍♀️

I know. That's why my suggestion is as stated on the comment above yours "Birthdays Commemorations and Anniversaries" :)

Amy (Other Amy) | 629 comments I think the confusion is you sounded like you also wanted to second another theme, which you cannot do per the rules - it's either nominate or second, not both.

Literature is one artform but how can we incorporate other artforms (painting, illustration, music, dance, etc.) into our reading?

Quarters could be broken down into geographical locations so we can learn more about art around the world with prompts based around art in a certain area (African art, European art, etc.). Or, quarters could be broken down into the various art forms themselves.

I second Other Artforms.

(I was actually working on almost the same thing. But mine was going to be Arts and Entertainment. Different name same type of theme.) :)

I agree with this, too. I think that could be an enjoyable journey with both fiction and nonfiction.

message 22: by Kristina (last edited Oct 10, 2022 06:24PM) (new)

Kristina | 631 comments How about something like, To Boldly Go?

Challenges and themes could be centered on:
✔️ Exploring new genres
✔️ Diversity challenges - reading #OwnVoices or about groups of people not like you
✔️ Different planets or worlds, other space-themed challenges
✔️ Travel books
✔️ Unique, brightly colored, and "bold" book covers
✔️ Speculative fiction or books telling stories in unusual ways
✔️ Microhistories or other nonfiction books about weird, unusual, or unknown subjects
✔️ Debut authors
✔️ Newly published books
✔️ Books about being "bold"
✔️ Exploration and undiscovered countries

Honestly, it might be too general, but I like the idea of a theme centered on exploration and new experiences! Title obviously stolen from Star Trek. 😅

All the ideas sound so fun, though!

Debra Diggs | 497 comments I love To Boldly Go. If it doesn't make yearly theme, maybe it could be cut down to a quarterly challenge.
