Done!

Shelf: Free Space
Book:

Completed: 10/29/22
How it Fits: #21 in Psy-Changeling series which is first on PNR group list
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I have had mixed reactions to this series since we moved on to the Trinity group, but I really liked this one. It had a lovely grumpy-sunshine romance, some interesting new developments with the overall story arc and good pacing throughout. And it's always good to see the Dark River cats. :)

Book: Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry
Date Read: 29/10/22
Rating: ★★

Review:
I liked the concept of Be My Ghost. A woman (Maureen) who has just lost her job inherits a hotel in Florida. It's a no-brainer for her to pack up her life and move down there with her faithful canine companion and work out why a stranger she has no memory of gifts her a hotel complete with an eccentric crew of staff and oh yeah - ghosts. The ghost element of the novel was quite fun. They don't have to haunt the place they passed on in but rather can choose their forever home. And I loved that it's a town secret that everyone knows they exist but deny to any outsiders.
What I didn't love about this book was how longwinded it was. There was too much description in parts and we didn't need to witness many of the conversations had or the entirety of them. I lost count of the number of times someone asked the main character if they could call her by her first name. I feel like the author is a foodie because there was a lot of food talk which was irrelevant to the overall story and felt a little mundane when I just wanted to know more about the ghosts or about the murder. Also with the murder - it took way too long into the novel before Maureen really seemed that concerned or curious about the murder which happened on her own front porch. I wanted some amateur sleuthing but I think I was at 80% into the novel before there was any real talk about who she thought could be the culprit.
Interesting take on a haunted hotel and I did like elements of the story but overall it took too long for anything to happen and I felt like I didn't know the main character as well as I wanted to.

Book: Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster
Date Read: 28/10/22
Rating: ★★★★

Review:
Kiss of Steel really surprised me and in a good way. I like steampunk and the world building in this book was fantastic. I also loved the characters. They're flawed and interesting in a way which made me really want to learn more about what made them tick and somewhat anxious over what they were going to get up to next. The vampire lore is different for any I've read before. I'm excited to read the next book in the series although I hope it has a little more steampunk elements to it. This one had had little but I'm greedy and as much as I loved the paranormal focus I wanted more gadgets whatnot.

I feel like this book has been on my to read list for forever and a day. I think I'll take that as a sign that it's time I finally got around to reading it!

This was a great book. It took me awhile with being sick and having to pause to finish other books for other challenges. I love time travel books and Stephen King. It had many twist and turns. I loved the problem that “the past doesn’t want to be changed” and how Jake has to work around this. Read this book if you haven’t. The audio was great

Review: I have read enough of this author to know I'm going to get a certain writing style. Sometimes I like it, sometimes it annoys me. This was a mix of both. I liked the set up of the book/series and feel it has the potential to be pretty interesting. I though the MC "found her powers" a little too easily, and the fact that it was super duper special powers was a little much but I guess it sets it up for drama in the future. I may continue the series as it was a quick easy listen on audio, but its not one that I can't wait to get back to.

I guess I am done with this series. I am in the minority with this book. I am not sure if it is because I have been sick and didn't have the patience. Charley seemed exceptional whiny is this book. The humor just wasn't that funny. I am going to take a break and maybe later try #5.

Review: This was fine. I probably would have liked it better a few years ago, but YA reading has progressed so far that this is kind of simplistic. And it was just a wee bit tooooo close to the basics of Supernatural for comfort.

This is a great follow up to the Shining . Danny is all grown up and survived. I also loved meeting Abra. I listened to the audio version narrated by Will Patton. It did not disappoint. If you liked the Shining you will like this book. I highly recommend the audio.

Book: Dark Prince by Christine Feehan
Date Read: 12/11/22
Rating: ★★

Review:
I was surprised I hadn’t had this book marked as read because it sounded like it was something I’d really enjoy. I worked out once I was halfway through that I had started this book years ago and just never finished it. I rediscovered why that was but this time - I made it all the way through. I didn’t like Mikhail in the slightest and that really tainted me towards everything else which was occurring in the book. Maybe I’d have thought a little differently if I had gotten to know him better before his first encounter with Raven but as it was I just couldn’t warm to him. It turns out for me it's a fine line between creepy and romantic and Mikhail just found himself firmly on the no-go side of it. But even with all that and my not really appreciating this novel - I’d read the series again. I’ve found in the past that sometimes it takes a few books for a new supernatural world to really feel like it’s found its lore and whatnot. So whilst Dark Prince wasn’t for me I can see myself continuing with the Carpathians in the future.

Book: Once Dead, Twice Shy
Date Read: 13/11/22
Rating: ★ ★ ★

Review:
I haven’t read any young adult novels in what seems like forever. Which is really strange because they used to be my favourite category of stories to read. I enjoyed Once Dead, Twice Shy for many reasons but there were a few ways in which it fell short. So much of the action occurs during a single day. Having such a short timeline often makes me feel like I haven’t gotten to know the characters very well. There was a sense that this novel started in the middle of Madison’s story and whilst we did get to have a better picture of her whole story via flashbacks etc it felt like it was a lot of effort on the reader’s behalf to fill in the whole picture. I did like the characters and the overall plot. It was like a YA centric version of the show Dead Like Me. But I was hoping that I would love it like I love the author’s The Hollows series.
