I didn't have an answer for this at first, but today I started The Pull of the Stars. It's about a nurse during the Spanish influenza pandemic. I worked in healthcare during COVID on a COVID floor during the early stages of the pandemic. Then I spent the last few years working at my state and county health department on COVID response teams. I'm only 10 pages in, and it's already challenging emotionally. I keep underlining and highlighting my own experiences echoing back to me. The scene with her reciting her patients' names on the train like a prayer was hard to read. I used to ride the trax line to work doing the same thing. I keep the brochure from the memorial of all of our deceased COVID patients and read the names from time to time.
The part about the signs everywhere about closed shops and canceled events hit me like a gut punch. I remember reading the signs in my city with such a sinking feeling. The part in the train where all the passengers shy away from a man with a cough. It's just so familiar.

The author did an excellent job capturing the minutia of pandemic life. When I'm old and people ask me what it's like to live through a pandemic, I'll just hand them this book.
