Final update, it was the correct book! Many thanks.
The only plot details I remember is that there is a small colony of humans living on an alien planet, and there are definitely large beasts/animals that they battle with. No humanoid alien species as far as I remember. Main character is a male probably mid 20's- 30s. He's torn between two women during the entire book, is eventually separated from the main group with one of the women, and ends up having families with both of them. I think possibly it was because there were very few other men, and the women realized they need to share in order to enjoy their life on this planet?
I wish I could remember more, but that's all I've got!
Pleeeease, someone save me from this nightmare. This book has been in the back of my mind for probably 5 years and I absolutely cannot remember enough details to find it.
