Q&A with Josh Lanyon discussion
What Are you Reading, Watching, Listening To?
I just recommended Josh's Adrien English to my therapist this morning. lol. :-D
I'm really liking Half Pass so far! I just haven't had much time to read it so I'm not too far into it but I think the love interest just arrived.
I've heard of Lucky Loser. And saw something or read something that gave me a good enough overview.
I saw a great video the other day with more recommended titles that I am planning to read very soon:
- American Government 101: From the Continental Congress to the Iowa Caucus, Everything You Need to Know About US Politics
- Radical Hope: Letters of Love and Dissent in Dangerous Times
- How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them
- Why We Can't Wait
- How We Show Up: Reclaiming Family, Friendship, and Community
- The ABCs of Queer History (Kids)
- The ABCs of Black History (Kids)
- Unbecoming (YA)

Great list. I read Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future by the same author as How Fasicsm Works on your list.
Kudos on the book recommendation to your therapist. 👏 I've started a book group at work and plan to make lots of recommendations. 😇
Oh that's awesome about your new book group! I currently run our staff book group but... we aren't very active and I haven't figured out yet how to reactivate us.
I'll have to check out Erasing History too. Thanks for the rec!

👍👍Our first book is The Nightingale. I wouldn’t have picked this for myself but it sounds okay. I'm pretty sure I've read this author many, many years ago.
For your book club, maybe just prod them by saying "this" is the book I'm reading and does anyone want to join. Never know.
Oh, that’s supposed to be a good one! I hope you like it!
My staff group picks our books in advance. I actually just suggested we discuss it over dinner! We’ll see if that fresh idea has any takers.

I just watched this video and I really liked the author’s thoughts on problematic romance novels getting recommended on TikTok. She then pointed to Trump’s win and related it back to those romance novels! 🤯 like, not that he won entirely because of romance novels, but they played a bit of a role perhaps where women believe they are special and the bad boy will become good just for them. And if you read enough books like that you’ll maybe believe it could happen to you too. All reading is propaganda. I’ve seen videos where it’s mentioned that folks who voted for him are like “but he’s not actually going to take away the insurance that helped me get over cancer” or “he won’t deport my family because we’re law abiding citizens.” It’s not exact, but I do see a correlation there. https://youtu.be/acCPmgQqctg?si=IU6kn...
I'm getting frustrated by the lack of movement in the relationship in Half Pass! I'm over the halfway point and the one character keeps running away, literally, and because of that this book does seem very dated. Also, because it's only told through one POV, we aren't getting into the other guy's head to know what's going on. I suspect he's just figuring out that he's bisexual. I guess we'll see. It won't take me too much longer, I think, to finish it.
I've decided to try her The Archer's Heart, Book One series on my December vacation and/or Lisa Henry's Dark Space trilogy. I loved the first book when I read it years ago and I didn't realize there would be more books, and I still haven't read them yet, so I'll need to reread the first one before I can dive into book two.
Jordan wrote: "I'm getting frustrated by the lack of movement in the relationship in Half Pass! I'm over the halfway point and the one character keeps running away, literally, and because of that ..."Yikes, literally running away, that's not good. Hope it all ends well. 🤞

The romance was really rushed at the end. I gave it 3 stars. :-(

I hate when the ending/hea feels rushed. All that story build up and a lackluster conclusion. Of course, when the book is GOOD I always demand more, so I'm rarely happy, lol.Hope the next book is better.
I'm currently listening to Somewhere Beyond the Sea, and enjoying it.
I've sadly taken some books off my TBR now that the US election is over. I had all kinds of non-fiction books about, you know, him, and now that the the future is so sad, I can’t bear to learn even more about how totally screwed we are. I'm looking for happy books. 😊
Melissa wrote: "I'm looking for happy books..."Same here. I'm not bothering to watch the news much now. What I do see is very depressing. So more romances for me!
Me three 😊. In my case fantasy: I finally read
Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) and I quite liked it, maybe 4 stars. Now I've started Harrow the Ninth and the beginning is not exactly accessible, even though you've just read book 1. I checked the reviews: many say that some 70% of the book is deliberately confusing, so I don't know what I'm going to do. Maybe jump a lot forward?
I have been listening to Gregory Ashe's The Last Picks series. I am loving the narrator, Andrew Gibson. Josh just announced he will be narrating the The Lemon Drop Kid, so I am super excited about that.

Same with me re the first book and the second. I began listening to Harrow the Ninth and finally gave up... this was a ways back when it first came out. I thought I might go back to it sometime, but there've been too many more inviting books to read.

I've been reading the ebooks and enjoying them. Guess I better check out the audiobooks. :)

Speaking of audiobooks, I recently listened to Ben Aaronovitch's The Masquerades of Spring: Rivers of London (numbered Book 4, but I'm not sure how that was calculated) narrated by the amazing Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. If you've read/listened to any of the Rivers of London series, this is a treat. And even if you haven't, you probably can follow as it's a prequel of sorts to the rest of the series. Thomas Nightingale arrives in NYC in the early 1930s on a mission that involves "Gussy"/Augustus, a Brit expatriate and one-time/sometime member of The Folly (paranormal detectives). Gussy is gay and this story aptly describes issues of race and sexuality at that time.

I hope he gets lots of work because he is very talented. I read Lemon Drop Kid, and look forward to the audio...one day.

I love the narrator of this series. The books are urban fantasy/alt. reality (magic exists) mainly set in London, with gods and monsters (not m/m). I feel that series gets progressively better. There's an overall story arc, but some plot resolution with each book. There are also a number of codas/shorts... and it looks like I haven't read Book 9. Oops.

I'm currently reading Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 and learning about my city's history!
I read many of the books in the Rivers of London series and really enjoyed them, but I did eventually stop reading after the main plot point was eventually resolved.

Just read The Blue Carbuncle (Sherlock Holmes) out loud with my Lonely Hearts Club that's staggering along. It was a really great time. I had three ladies and they all took turns reading out loud with me! We all really enjoyed it!

Just finished my fourth read of Fadeout last night so that my library book group could discuss it tonight! SUCH a great read once again and SUCH a great book discussion! We had so much to talk about! And several of them requested the next title in the series so they will keep going with it! YESSSSS!!!
Jordan wrote: "Just finished my fourth read of Fadeout last night so that my library book group could discuss it tonight! SUCH a great read once again and SUCH a great book discussion! We had so muc..."I have that booked marked as a maybe. The audio is available through Hoopla. Have you tried the audio?
That is great news several people want to continue the series. I always love it when that happen. :) Congrats on your success, lol.
I'm watching a few things right now.The Pitt on Max. Each episode takes place in an hour of the hospital, like 7am-8am, and the next episode is 8am-9am, etc. It's good, though there is nudity and of course swearing so proceed with caution for some viewers. The medical aspect seems really detailed. The characters, well, it's fiction so of course there is drama and super-humans, good and bad. All the typical things you can expect from TV.
Doc on Hulu. Amnesia. My biggest weakness. Just started, maybe on episode 3. It's going well. Time will tell if I continue. So far, nothing super big has happened, still introducing the audience to all the players.
Paradise on Netflix. Wow, I didn't know what was happening, but I did figure it out. No spoilers. Another show I've only seen a few episodes and I don't know how I feel about it yet.
Just finished re-watching Person of Interest. It's a good show though it does go over the top in the believability. I wish the show had stuck to it's original premise of saving people one number at a time. All the "extra" stuff was just unnecessary noise in my opinion.
I'm reading/listening to several good things right now.
Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams. This has been quite fascinating. I'm learning about sleep and all the factors that aid or impede it, as well as the benefits of sleep. Of course I know the benefits, but the book goes way beyond the obvious. Highly Recommend. The audio is well narrated.
Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea. This one is a surprising hit. I love to learn and I have no idea how I found this book, but it's just awesome. It's about more than the number zero, it teaches you about numbers and math and counting from the beginning of (known) time. Highly recommend. Reading the ebook which helps me digest the info, but I did listen to the audio for some, and it was very well done. I think either options work, but I am reading it as my choice for my commute to work.
In Five Years. I'm reading this as part of my work Book Club. I've had it on my TBR for years and now seemed like as good a time as any. I did cave and read some reviews, which, yeesh, some strong opinions there. Hope my experience is better. Listening to the audio. So far the story is kind of slow, nothing has really happened. I'm about 35% in.
I started My Policeman and Assistant to the Villain, but they weren't working for me. I had to call it quits. Haven't gotten around to writing my reviews though.
So excited to announce I am (soon) re-reading (for the millionth time) The Mermaid Murders by our own Josh Lanyon. :D. It's on my list so I'll be starting it soon.
One book (series) I think will become my next obsession is SOS Hotel: For a Supernaturally Safe Stay!, narrated by the amazing Michael Lesley.
That's it for now. :)
Melissa wrote: "Jordan wrote: "Just finished my fourth read of Fadeout last night so that my library book group could discuss it tonight! SUCH a great read once again and SUCH a great book discussion..."
I've collected the audiobooks and very much enjoy them. The narrator voices characters fitting to the time. However, if you haven't read the series you might consider reading the first book in order to imagine your own voicing, then check out the audio. Or sample the audio to see what you think. It's one of my favorite series.

Oh! My fandom group just finished our second rewatch of Person of Interest last Sunday! I think that was my 4th rewatch? Anyway, it's a personal favorite of mine, but yes, I agree, I wish they'd stuck to the original premise. This is the show I've been writing fanfic for since 2018! I love John and Harold soooo much. Don't get me going on it or I won't be able to shut up. lol.

That's so cool you write fanfic about Person of Interest. I think this was my 3rd re-watch, not sure. There were so many things I didn't remember. I remembered a lot from the first 3 seasons, and I remembered the end of the series, but everything in between, clearly my brain couldn't handle it and deleted it, lol.

Yes, Zero is a must! 😊 The ebook does have images so that is an additional benefit over the audio. Borrowing the audio from the library doesn't include any additional files as some audios offer when you buy it. Like the book on sleeping I'm listening to, it keeps referencing the pdf but of course I don’t have that.
SOS hotel, hoopla only has books 1-3. Sad sigh. I'm sure I'll get the rest somehow, just a matter of when. Glad you love it too.

I loved the entire series. I have the edition compiled into a single book, printed in tiny characters: The Complete Brandstetter.
We've been watching Grace, a homicide detective series set in Brighton. I find myself on the edge of my seat and at times it's a bit hardcore for my usual taste, but overall very well done despite Grace's (rather obligatory) ongoing issues with his superior officer(s). :)
The personal backstory is that Grace's wife disappeared some years back, and that plot arch appears to be going in a direction I find less interesting, but this is overall an engaging series.

I've seen this show advertised somewhere so I am familiar with it. Glad you've found a good show even if some parts aren't that great.
More and more international shows/movies are coming to the main streaming sites and have either English dubbing or subtitles. I've found several movies and shows that are from other countries. Wish I had a talent in languages. Would make watching them so much more enjoyable. When I have to read subtitles, I know I miss action on screen while I am reading, and when there is English dubbing, the emotion and real action of the actors is missing. Though some of the voice actors really do a great job and give it their all, but it's just not the same.

My husband worked in our local art film theaters way back when (in the 70s & 80s). We're very used to watching non-U.S. English films with sub-titles. I know a bit of French and get a glimpse of what I'm missing in translation. We even watch the Brit films with sub-titles. Otherwise I lose track of the visuals while trying to hear what's being said. :) I agree with you about dubbing.

The purpose of Discord is to bring groups together, like here, but there’s a video element if you want it and you can easily ping members and react to messages.

I recently finished Kill for Me, Kill for You, it's rather dark, but a well written story. It starts off slow and confusing though it got better for me.
Also finished Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care, very educational.
And, ugh, Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father's Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success. It's not going to make anyone any happier after reading this. It too is educational, but sadly depressing based on current events.
I'm currently re-reading Josh's Secrets and Scrabble series, and I just finished re-reading Adrien English. Also listening to Broken Bird by Gregory Ashe. Love this series!
I'm re-watching The West Wing, The Flash, Arrow, and literally watching the latest episode of John Oliver (it's about TikTok)
