I'm trying to recall the name of a hardcover book that comprised a collection of gothic short stories by a female author, written in the 1990's to early 2000's (I bought a used copy in 2005, but loaned it out in 2006 and never got it back). The book had a black dust cover with white writing, perhaps with a silhouette of a person. My best guess is that the book was written in the mid to late 1990's.
The short stories were set (IIRC) in late medieval times, although the time period seemed deliberately vague, and were very grim/macabre. One of them centered around a poisoned well at a convent, where only one nun knew the cause - a dead body she had thrown down the well a month earlier.
I don't believe the individual stories were related to each other (maybe there were about 10 in total), but they had that grim/macabre feel in common. A very Edgar Allen Poe feel.
I'm hoping someone else out there read this book and can help me with the name of it.
