Tracy has an epiphany after her experience with Lindsay and her sister Aileen, which leads her to Gloria Chin Liu in China where she discovers Elle Chin. Your thoughts about what Gloria did and Tracy’s decision to leave things be? Was Elle’s situation extreme or representative of too many divorcing parents? Was it fair that Jewell doesn’t know her daughter is alive and Bobby does?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I got a little sidetracked, thinking that somehow the elderly neighbor had a hand in saving Elle. I missed the leap to China, but when Tracy decided (with the legal knowledge she had about international adoptions/kidnappings) to leave Elle where she was, with family, I could see her reasoning.

However, I must say that I would not want my child to be raised in
Communist China over the long term, but with Jewel as an alternative, I didn't see another option.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments In some cases, it may be better for a child to live with a third party who cares for them, instead of divorcing parents who are busy trying to out-do their former partner. I can see Tracy deciding that Elle would be better off with her aunt. Bobby now knows that Elle is alive and safe with his sister. He knows that if Jewel learns that Elle is alive, she'll start making both their lives miserable.

Did the police department pay for Tracy to fly over to China to check out this lead? I can't see them doing that.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1203 comments I think the book says somewhere in there that she paid her own way.

No, Tracy went on her on dime and not in an official capacity.

Boy, this case took a turn! I’d thought about the sister but only in partnership with Bobby but that never seemed to work.

How often have we seen children used as a weapon in divorce or collateral damage as the parents fight with each other. Poor Elle was in a terrible situation. Jewel was bad enough but that boyfriend was an additional concern. Bobby didn’t seem to be able to rise above it all for Elle’s sake. I thought what Gloria did was heroic and risky. She loved her brother but knew someone needed to step up and save this child.

Tracy went to China for two reasons: to confirm her suspicions and to see for herself if Elle was in a better place. Smart that she went there in an unofficial capacity as she was under no obligation to attempt to return Elle, an American citizen who’d been abducted, back to the US. It was a humane thing for her to do.

Should Jewel know her child was alive? If I thought this woman was suffering because of the loss of her daughter I would be screaming, “Yes!”. But Jewel would only be interested in how she could continue to strike out at Bobby. And kudos to Bobby for letting things be. He finally woke up.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments using children. I've lost a couple of friends because of it.

I suspected the sister when Jewel said she walked out holding the hand of an Asian woman. Although it confused me when Bobby told Tracy about his mistakes the night his daughter disappeared. Then I wondered if Jewel was behind the abduction. I worried that she didn't want to be a mother, but she didn't want Bobby to have Elle either.

I am glad that Bobby has a relationship with his daughter. I don't think he was a lousy father at heart. Jewel brought out the worst in him, and he didn't know how to respond maturely. He is doing much better with his second wife.

Sharon the first part of your comment is missing…

I think Bobby was a good father but put her on his and Jewel’s battlefield. He should have gotten a counselor to help him and his daughter. Yes, he learned a hard lesson and is a better father now. He would never have married Jewel if she hadn’t been pregnant so I think he had good instincts. Should have used a condom😏

~Melissa~ | 429 comments I was wondering about the neighbor lady during the whole story honestly. Made sense though that it would be the sister who stepped in to help her niece out of a bad situation. That boyfriend was a snafu just waiting to happen to Elle and the fact that Jewel was unaware was terrible.

It is terrible when you put children in between you during a divorce. I thought Bobby was trying to be a good father but Jewel definitely new how to push his buttons and show him up as well as putting herself in the best spotlight.

It is apparent even now that Jewel is still all about Jewel.

I was glad to see that Elle is somewhere that she is cared for and that she gets to see her dad.

Like Jonetta said - Bobby should have used a condom

I'm not sure how I did that.

It was supposed to say something like...

I have seen a lot of people use their children during a nasty divorce. It makes me crazy when I see that happen, and I'm one of those people who can't keep my mouth shut when children are involved. I've lost some close friends because I told them how wrong it is.

I know it can be hard but…I wouldn’t be able to be silent either.
