The main character's father is the developer of the game. The book is part of a series. The first book of the series the protagonists is testing out a virtual reality computer game that makes him "live out" the life of perseus as he wanders through the labyrinth and slays the minataur. Second book is about vampire and werewolfs and third is norse mythology.

There is an entity within the game that is constantly battling the protagonists as it tries to reach the "real" world.

as soon as i read this description i knew id read it but couldn't remember the title. i don't know if it is the same as what the OP is describing but i know that the one i read was definitely shadow of the minatour so thankyou! :)
