Team Carrot, it's time to fill those cornucopias with our autumn harvest!

You will work to fill each cornucopia using the prompts provided. You can read to fill them in any order you'd like, and you can refill the same ones multiple times.

Each book read may only be used for one prompt per team challenge. Don't forget about your acorns! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 15 hours of audio listed to).

ACORNS

- Earn an acorn for every 1000 pages read as a team.
- Earn an acorn for every 15 hours of audio listened to.

Note: Acorns must be accrued to fill the cornucopias. Once you complete a cornucopia, those acorns should not be used on future cornucopias.

CORNUCOPIA #1

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book with a majority orange cover
- A book that is 400+ pages
- A book featuring an animal in the story
- A book that was published in the fall (September, October, or November)

CORNUCOPIA #2

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A dystopian novel
- A book with a majority red cover
- A book with a person's first name in the title
- A book set in or about nature (forest, camping, environmental literature, etc.)

CORNUCOPIA #3

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in a school
- A book featuring a ghost
- A book with a black and white cover
- A book by an author who is not alive anymore

CORNUCOPIA #4

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A book set in the 1900s
- A book about family dynamics
- A book with a majority yellow cover
- A magical realism novel

CORNUCOPIA #5

- Accrue 3 acorns +

Complete all four prompts:
- A mystery or thriller
- A book that features sports
- A book with an item of food on the cover
- A young adult novel

RachelG. Morning. I am glad to be on the team. Luckily I don't have to work today so I can spend time organizing my reading schedule and figure out what books I might need to grab from the library.

I am excited to see a book that features sports. I purposely left 150 pages of Alice Cooper, Golf Monster: A Rock 'n' Roller's 12 Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict to finish during the readathon in case that was one of the prompts.

Irene (irene5) | 917 comments Hi Team Carrot! Glad to be here :D

I'll be a bit busy in the middle of the read-a-thon but have a couple of books that I've started but have 100+ pages left that I know I can get done first thing on the 10th :)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Good morning, Team Carrot! 🥕 I love these readathons, I’m excited to get my planned books organized and then get readin’! ☺️ I have a number of shorter/quicker reads I’ve been saving for this week, and hopefully they’ll fit into some of the trickier prompts.

message 5: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 917 comments Hi Roxana!
I actually just read Murder on the Links a few days ago! I would suggesting adding "a book about family dynamics" to the options it falls under and removing "a book that features sports" since sports are never played in the course of the book (the only connection to sports is that the body is found on a planned golf course that's under construction, but golf is never otherwise discussed). Totally unsolicited advice so feel free to ignore me lol - I know you're going to read it soon enough anyway!

How funny you just read it! I have actually read it many, many times over the years, this one’s a reread, as it happens 😅 I didn’t intentionally leave it off family dynamics so thanks for pointing that out (just missed seeinf the prompt entirely)! I do think the golf connection is enough for the prompt for me (for example, discussing how much the location of the body suggests knowledge/ignorance of golf on the killer’s part) but thanks for the reminder on family dynamics!

I see, that makes sense!!

Can I ask what your favorite Poirot books are? I've only read 4 (Orient Express, Roger Ackroyd, Styles, and Links) and I'm trying to read at least 5 more but there are so many that it's really difficult to narrow it down!

You started with some of my favorites, actually! 😂 I also love Curtain (Poirot’s last case, it was written early, put away in a safe, and then published posthumously, so while it’s fun to read it last or at least after you’ve read several of his books, it’s by no means necessary - in many ways it has much more the flavor of the earlier Poirots than the later ones), Cards on the Table, The ABC Murders, Death on the Nile, Thirteen at Dinner/Lord Edgware Dies (US/UK titles but same book), and After the Funeral.

message 9: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 917 comments Thank you for the recommendations!! :D (And it's so interesting that Curtain was written early on!)

Oh my gosh, what a mood, lol. I have a book club book I need to finish today that I’m not really feeling at the moment (it’s good, I’m just not in the right mood for it), and all I want to do is start in on the pile I’d marked down for this week instead 😂

I am feeling the same way, but luckily one of my manga library holds is available so I can read that today and work on my other books first thing tomorrow.

My favorite was Styles, then Orient Express and Links. Roger Ackroyd was good too but I unfortunately guessed the twist really early on because it was the same as another thriller I had read right before it!

message 17: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 239 comments Hi Team Carrot! Happy to be here. Glad to be reading with you this week. I have a few books I'm reading right now, and they all have well over 100 pages left. I'll see if I can place them anywhere to fill our cornucopias!

I’m in Italy on my honeymoon for the next few days so should be able to read a lot! I have 100 pages left in a couple of books I’m in the middle of so in a good place to start.

It’s Saturday for me so I’ll get started!

That's unfortunate timing with the other book's ending! I got spoiled for it before I actually read it - in the silliest way, I picked up a book called "Who Killed Roger Ackroyd?" (nonfiction literary analysis of the book, it's actually a fascinating read), glanced at the back, and it said "Of course everyone knows *spoiler* killed Roger Ackroyd." Not everyone! I hadn't, yet! 😂 I think if you liked Styles best, you'll like Curtain a lot, too, it's got a lot of similarities, on purpose - the first and last Poirot cases, and they literally return to Styles for it.

RachelG. I finished Alice Cooper, Golf Monster: A Rock 'n' Roller's 12 Steps to Becoming a Golf Addict and put it under sport but it can be moved to first name if needed. I am going to listen to an audiobook as I look at books for ATY 2023 or if I go out walking today but it is supposed to be 90 degrees this afternoon and hazy from wildfires. I also have a couple print books I am working on.

message 27: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Jill, I'm guessing your two books listed as in progress on the complete tab are meant to be on plans? I can move them over if it's easier (I know dealing with spreadsheets can be a pain on mobile!) but I didn't want to without checking of course :)

message 28: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I spent the first part of the morning listening to Charmed Life (big nostalgia for me, but I hadn't listened to the audio before so I was relieved to discover the reader is quite good!), and have been reading Olga Dies Dreaming in print since that. So hoping to have both of those finished by this evening, to start this readathon off!

Sorry, yes they should be on plans. 😊

message 30: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Finished my first book. Looks like we are already halfway to our first acorn!

message 31: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Just finished my first book, Olga Dies Dreaming, I added it to majority orange cover. (It's a pretty reddish orange, but I think orange rather than red. I definitely held it up to several different orange and red items around my house to check though, lol)

I have one hour left of Charmed Life, so I'll be done with that soon as well. It doesn't fit a lot of prompts, so I'll probably put it on "author who isn't alive anymore". And then pick up Book of Night or The War Girls!

message 32: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I finished Other Birds and added it as magical realism. I’m also about 40 percent through the audiobook of The Road and am going to start The Haunting of Maddy Clare today.

We already have two acorns. Good job, team!

message 33: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I finished Pickle in the Middle Murder this morning and hope to finish The Haunted Homecoming and Fudge Bites today.

Yesterday a wildfire started about 40 miles east of where I live and the smoke plus ash is making it hard for me to go outside so I will be able to spend today reading indoors.

message 34: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I am wanting to download an audiobook that I can listen to at work tomorrow. Are there any prompts you all think I should focus on?

message 35: by Caitie (new)

Caitie | 144 comments Just finished London’s Number One Dog Walking Society. It was very sweet! I related a lot to the author as a fellow dog sitter/walker. I put it in Cornucopia 1 as a book featuring an animal.

Flying home tomorrow and going west so I get an extra long day! Hopefully I can motivate myself to read for much of the time.

message 36: by Irene (last edited Sep 11, 2022 11:21AM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 917 comments Congrats Caitie!! Have so much fun!!

Welcome Rose!

Roxana, that's so cool that Curtain goes back to Styles! Really looking forward to reading that one.

I didn't have time to check in last night but I just added the 3 books I've finished so far to 400+ pages, black&white cover, and YA book. Please feel free to move them around if they fit another prompt better! I just went by what it seemed like there were fewest of in the plans tab.

message 37: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I just added my book Haunted Homecoming to Cornucopia 3 which was the last prompt needed for that one. Do we want to use our first 3 acorns that we have accrued there?

message 38: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments RachelG. wrote: "I just added my book Haunted Homecoming to Cornucopia 3 which was the last prompt needed for that one. Do we want to use our first 3 acorns that we have accrued there?"

Sounds like a good idea to me! :) go team!

message 39: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I finished Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow which I added to a book set in the 1900’s.

message 40: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Just added The Lives of Christopher Chant to the first name in the title prompt.

I ran through my planned audiobooks so much faster than I expected (I just got a new computer, and my games play sooo much better on it than my old dead one, it's hard for me to do anything else, lol), I have to get to these physical books eventually!

message 41: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 239 comments I finished Cantoras and put it under a book set in the 1900s since it didn't fit in any of the cornucopias that are currently unfinished.

message 42: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Katherine wrote: "I finished Cantoras and put it under a book set in the 1900s since it didn't fit in any of the cornucopias that are currently unfinished."

Same for the book I just finished, The Sun Is Also a Star - put it on family dynamics on that newly started cornucopia. (That's a pretty common prompt though, I suspect, so feel free to move it, anyone, if needed)

message 43: by Caitie (new)

Caitie | 144 comments Just finished You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey. It was so so good! Equal parts hilarious and horrifying.

Next up is The Proposal! Taking off on flight #1 soon.

Hi! There was some confusion in my group about how to complete the cornucopias, so I've updated the first message in your thread to make it a bit clearer. Just wanted to let you know -- the prompts and requirements have not changed, just formatted them to be clearer on the requirements.

Just a reminder that I'm not actively checking all of the threads, so if you have any questions about the way the challenge works, feel free to post in the FAQ thread and I'll get back to you!

message 45: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. Cornucopias 1, 4 and 5 are just waiting for acorns. Anyone care which one we give the 3/4 acorns currently accrued to first? I was going to start with 1 and work down as we get them accrued but didn't want to do anything without asking.

message 46: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I think that's a good choice.

message 47: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Yeah, that seems fine to me, too, Rachel :)

message 48: by Caitie (new)

Caitie | 144 comments Just landed back in Seattle! I woke up 22 hours ago and it’s only 6pm. Longest day ever!

Finished The Proposal and started One to Watch on my last flight. Probably broke my record for number of pages read on a day.

Should I keep flying west around the world until the Readathon is over? 😹

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments How’s everyone doing today?

I started several different books yesterday instead of actually finishing any, lol, but now I’m on track to apparently finish four or five at once eventually, so…yay? 😅
