Go Ask Alice is almost all black and considered a classic and might have been in the older teen section.
I think the historical fiction aspect. It also seemed decently well known. Not Go Ask Alice as I don't believe it had someone's name in it. The mc was a boy, maybe later teens, so 20s.

It definitely could have. I couldn't say strongly either way.

Sadly not The Giver. There were no people on it as far as I can remember and it was a very deep black cover.

It also says you added it many years ago! Funny how all these things tie back to us!

I only read the first page.
I'M SORRY, I just hated how bad that book was already. If that makes sense, the book seemed like a "To Kill a Mockingbird" type of thing. It was a glossy paperback, generally pretty tiny. The title was either two or three words, but I'm leaning towards three. Maybe the word war was in it? It was probably published in 2003-2014 but I took it from the "older teen" section in third grade which was about 2017 or maybe 2018. I wish I had plot details but that would make me go through the misery of reading that book, and I just couldn't bear to do that.
