Priscilla (gcrokzzzzz) | 37 comments Ok so, I'm only on the first chapter so I don't know too much about Devi but for some reason I can't stop picturing her as Freema Agyeman. She was Martha Jones in Doctor Who.

message 2: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments I love that idea! I'm only 60 pages in, but I was thinking Tatiana Maslany :)

message 3: by Priscilla (new)

Priscilla (gcrokzzzzz) | 37 comments Oh totally! Tatiana might be even better.

message 4: by Frakki (last edited Feb 27, 2015 05:54PM) (new)

Frakki Karu | 509 comments I've just started as well and I'm loving the Serenity/Farscape vibe.

My favorite badass actor is Michelle Rodriguez. She can slay with a look and is sexy as hell.

message 5: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Michelle Rodriguez has the perfect attitude!
Also Zoe Saldana :)

message 6: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments NEVERMIND re: Michelle Rodriguez

She's a lovely actress, but she's (if you'll forgive the phrasing) being a COMPLETE DICK about PoC in Superhero roles

message 7: by S H A R O N (new)

S H A R O N (ishari) | 21 comments I always pictured Kara Thrace (Starbuck) from the new Battlestar Galactica. I have no idea if Devi is a blonde (I'm the worst at remembering descriptions), but I found her attitude and behavior to be straight up Starbuck.

message 8: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Confused... Wasn't Katee Sackoff Starbuck?

message 9: by Katie (last edited Mar 01, 2015 10:44AM) (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Nevermind, shows how much I know, lol (Starbuck was just a nickname, Kara Thrace was the character's real name)...ignore me

message 10: by S H A R O N (new)

S H A R O N (ishari) | 21 comments Lol, my bad...should have put Katee Sackhoff in my post somewhere rather than just her character's name. :)

message 11: by Frakki (new)

Frakki Karu | 509 comments Devi has dark long hair, which seems odd for a merc. I would cut it off if I had to wear a helmet. But, if you take a look at the author, she has hair like that and looks like the girl on the cover.

Katie/Starbuck would be awesome as well.

On the Rodriguez comment, I see her point -- once she clarified it. I feel that way about good Women's rolls. If we want strong roles for women, we need to write them and/or support the writers of them. Shonda Rymes is a great example of creating the world she lives in on TV.

I would love to see some entirely new concepts of superheroes written for today's world. Then I wouldn't be annoyed so much by the Avenger- type movies.

message 12: by Katie (new)

Katie (katie_jones) | 348 comments Frakki wrote: "On the Rodriguez comment, I see her point -- once she clarified it."
The clarification did help, but, I don't see anything wrong with Miles M. as Spiderman, or Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel. They can take an established name and do the same good with it, because there isn't anything inherently racial about those roles.
That being said, I'm all for creating diverse roles to begin with and properly representing them! As an old-school comic book fan, there's nothing more exciting for me than to see the next Avengers movie....(until Captain Marvel at least!), but for me it has more to do with fantastic writers/directors/actors than new or old concepts.

So...what about Rupert? It's such an odd name, it makes it hard to picture someone. I love Chris Pratt (cause I love my men a little goofy) or Shondo Blades (From The Quest, that reality show from last summer...which yes, I watched, because those are my people and I would totally do that stuff) ;)

message 13: by Glaiza (last edited Mar 03, 2015 06:14PM) (new)

Glaiza For some reason, Rupert in my head is lithe-like so I'm imagining someone like Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, Thranduil from The Hobbit). Rupert strikes me as someone who appears gentle and kind but he can flip quickly into intense, cold and unreadable.

Although I agree that Rupert was hard to picture so I think it'd be fun to cast him. I like Katie's suggestions of Chris Pratt or Shondo Blades too.

message 14: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) Devi for me is Felicia day doppelgänger Emily Blunt. I finally saw Edge of Tomorrow recently and loved it so Emily should be in everything.

Lee Pace is an excellent choice for Rupert!

message 15: by S H A R O N (new)

S H A R O N (ishari) | 21 comments I had a hard time trying to figure out a choice for Rupert...but now that you mention Lee Pace, I have to agree. I can see him doing a great job with Rupert.

message 16: by Priscilla (new)

Priscilla (gcrokzzzzz) | 37 comments Nova is DEFINITELY Luna Lovegood.

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 12 comments Ah, I also picture Katee Sackhoff (a la Starbuck) as Devi even though she doesn't look like her at all. The personality match is too perfect.

For Rupert I'd totally cast Philip Lee (Korean-American actor working in Korea). If ya'll don't know who he is, google him and you won't be disappointed.

I'd cast Anthony Head as Basil's voice actor.

message 18: by Frakki (new)

Frakki Karu | 509 comments Philip Lee is a beautiful choice.

message 19: by Holly (new)

Holly (holly-kat) For Devi, I thought Evangeline Lilly of the Lost days. She was so badass in Lost, and I think she could totally pull off space mercenary.

For Rupert, I thought Henry Cavill. He's got that quiet and mysterious thing going on. (But I also live a Lee Pace-appreciation life so no arguments from me on that front.)

I can see Lee Pace. He can pull off that sweet smile anytime but also can pull off rage.

message 22: by Claire (new)

Claire (cacromwell) | 221 comments In my head I was picturing this like an animated film or video game, so my Devi looks a lot like the cover of Rules of Engagement (which is another good sci-fi series), specifically the hardcover edition by Baen.

My Rupert looks a lot like Jin from the anime Samurai Champloo, minus the glasses and plus an apron. I tried to find a real-life equivalent but had no luck with a Google search!

message 23: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn No (jocelynno) | 34 comments Michelle Rodriguez is spot-on for how I imagined Devi, though Morena Baccarin would also rock that role (she always seems so grounded, though - I pictured Devi as more of a hothead).

Rupert? I'd like to see John Cho in that role. Because he can seem unassuming, but can also be smoking hot. And he always looks vaguely scared of himself. (He was a patient/guest star on "House" for one episode, and his acting there blew me away).

message 24: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Frakki wrote: "

Definitely!

For me Devi is a friend of mine called Devi who is small and muscular and has a lot of long dark hair! BUT I could also see Sophie Okonedo. All the descriptions of her wild hair made me see an Afro-Caribbean woman with natural hair. Plus there is a description of her in a purple dress making her skin glow, and I kept thinking how good purple looks on women of colour.

Oooo... Sophie Okonedo is beautiful and she has a really young face. She would be perfect.

I really want to see a TV show of this now!

message 26: by Raya (last edited Mar 13, 2015 10:58PM) (new)

Raya (rayaha) I loved Emily Blunt from the Edge of Tomorrow - she kicked butt without losing any femininity. Female AND strong is a great combo! Rupert I pictured as Karl Urban...dark...but a sweet smile.

message 27: by KaLee (new)

KaLee Douglas | 50 comments I know he doesn't completely fit the description of Rupert but I think the Rock would be good for me. I don't usually like muscular men but there is something sweet and teddy like about the Rock and that is what I think Rupert would be. Plus, that smile.

message 28: by Brook (new)

Brook | 2 comments For Devi, I was picturing Angelina Jolie aka Lara Croft. She did remind me of Katee Sakhoff in Battlestar but the physical description doesn't match. For Rupert, I was thinking Tom Hiddleston. For Nova, I was thinking the girl who played Luna Lovegood.

message 29: by Maria (new)

Maria | 2 comments I was imagining Rupert looking just like Shondo Blades.

message 30: by Minsta (new)

Minsta | 93 comments I could see the cast from LARP's as the main characters - they could play any and all roles!!! I do, however, also like Raya's pick of Karl Urban as Rupert :)

message 31: by Neohgirl (new)

Neohgirl | 68 comments Based on the description in the book (5'6". brown poufy hair, looking closer to 13 than 30) I was thinking somewhere between Ellen Page and Shailene Woodley.

Rupert - Colin O'Donoghue or Kristoffer Polaha
Ren - Amandla Stenberg
Caldswell: Max Martini

I was like 3/4 of the way through it when I started thinking about casting, and came up with Tom Hiddleston also! It made reading it 10x better.

I love Michelle or Tatiana for Devi.

message 33: by Neohgirl (new)

Neohgirl | 68 comments And for the voice of Basil, I kept imagining John Cleese.

message 34: by Monica (new)

Monica | 8 comments The descriptions of Devi in the book are that she looks almost child-like. So I'm thinking maybe Chloe Grace Moretz. And while I love the idea of Lee Pace as Rupert, if my choice for Devi is Chloe I think the visual age gap between her and Lee Pace would be creepy. So for Rupert I'm thinking Brett Dalton from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

message 35: by Monica (new)

Monica | 8 comments And for Nova, how about Amandla Stenburg, who played Rue in The Hunger Games?

message 36: by Aaron (new)

Aaron | 1 comments I totally Veronica'd this book. I did not have any casting ideas and instead just created the characters in my head.

The main problem with Devi is that she was described to look very young, thirteen if I remember right, and that limits the casting a lot, but like someone already mentioned, I would love to see Sophie Okonedo as her.

After thinking for a long while, the closest actor I could come up with for Rupert was Jason Behr.

Obviously Nova would be Evanna Lynch aka Luna Lovegood.

With Hyrek, I kept imagining a green Garrus from Mass Effect.

For Basil's voice, however, I could not help imagining Ryon Day's chicken voice. (If you do not know what that is, check out Felicia and Ryon Day's Co-Optitude episode of Battletoads.)

message 37: by Erin (new)

Erin Kent | 3 comments I saw Eliza Dushku for Devi!!! (Though I love Michelle Rodriguez)
Lee Pace for Rupert

message 38: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 12 comments I would like to change my vote to Michelle Rodriguez for Devi.
And I love your idea for John Cleese to voice Basil, Neohgirl.

message 39: by KC (new)

KC Ryan (kc_ryan) | 51 comments I keep picturing Chloe Bennet from Agents of SHIELD as Devi. And Caldswell just keeps coming up as Bryan Cranston, while Mabel is Carol from Walking Dead. (I don't know the actress's name off the top of my head, and I'm too tired to Internet.)

I also agree with everyone on Lee Pace. Put on the blue-colored contact lenses and that's him.

message 40: by Allison (new)

Allison Brown (alliekat893) | 101 comments I don't have my own casting for Rupert... but Lee Pace just doesn't do it for me. I really don't find him attractive, at all. To each their own, right? :) I think I too mostly "Veronica'd" this book!

message 41: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (planetshannon) | 48 comments I found coming up with who should be cast for Devi really challenge, but finally settled on Zoe Bell.

Rupert was a huge challenge. I love so many of the suggestions here. Katie, I loved Shondo Blades in The Quest for Rupert, I think he'd be a great pick. Also love Glaiza and Erin's suggestion of Lee Pace for Rupert. He's got both the calm energy and the ferocious fighter thing when need be. And Frakki...Roy Dupuis is a sweet choice! He's such a great actor, he can do anything.

The only person I could think of as Rupert was George Blagden (Athelstan in Vikings). I think he could rock it.

For the Captain I would cast Max Martini, no question.

For the Captain's daughter I would switch things up a bit an make the character his son and cast Jonathan Jackson.

Ryon Day's chicken voice as Basil's voice was the only casting that popped in my head during the book! I could not remember what episode I remembered him doing it in though so thanks for remembering Aaron!

message 43: by Geohyde (new)

Geohyde | 22 comments It took a while but my mind finally settled on James D'Arcy (Edwin Jarvis from Agent Carter) as Rupert. I think he does the whole aloof but surprisingly compassionate thing really well.

message 44: by KC (last edited Mar 22, 2015 03:15PM) (new)

KC Ryan (kc_ryan) | 51 comments While I'm still on Team Lee Pace, I was going through the description again in my head, "Wait a sec... long dark hair... piercing blue eyes..."

"OH GODDAMMIT, I FORGOT HIDDLESTON!"

Have you watched "Only Lovers Left Alive"? His Loki, sure, but add his performance as that character into the mix and YES! Hiddleston!

message 46: by Jo (new)

Jo | 69 comments With Devi's young looking face I pictured Ali Shawkat.
Alia Shawkat

For some reason for Rupert I just kept thinking of the shark smile of Michael Fassbender

And for the Plasmex I just pictured all the invisible things my cats chase around the house.

message 47: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lolaretayas) | 194 comments I don't know why, but I think of Big Bird when Basil is mentioned... It just puts a weird image of him in my head walking around a space ship. Though now that I'm reading the second book and seeing the comments on here it's now Big Bird with Ryon's chicken voice.

message 48: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 3 comments Devi for me was a young Sigourney Weaver. I couldn't picture anyone else even if I wanted to.

message 49: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (calijonathan) My go-to bad-ass female lead is always Kate Beckinsale in Underworld

message 50: by Sophie (new)

I totally agree with both Emily Blunt AND Karl Urban. Oh heck yes. I could also go with Michelle Rodriguez for Devi. Cotter played by adam baldwin is a big yes!

As for Ruprt, I really Veronica'd him, althouh I could see Lee Pace as pulling it off. I could see a young Liam Neeson playing him though...
