The story is okay. light and fluffy. I'll finish up tomorrow."

Yeah, I kind of thought I'd finish today too, but just had too many distractions and interruptions. I'm only about halfway through, but I have a bunch of errands to run tomorrow and that's prime listening time for me. And I agree with your assessment, Chan...nothing spectacular, but cute and fluffy and not annoying, so I'm fine with it.

I've read another story, where the heroine is a new business owner and she hires a carpenter to help her get the run down building ready. I think it may have been by Tessa Bailey. Idk...but it is an interesting spin on the MCs power dynamics.

Yes, this is a little different than the usual, but even with the actual occupations more or less reversed from the norm, he's still the one with the money and she's struggling. It would be nice to see something with the heroine having the financial advantage and the hero struggling. I'm sure there must be some out there, but they're rare!

I was thinking the same thing!!!! I wish that Weddings in a Box had been a stronger business so they were at least on equal footing. Although the idea that a wood carver is selling his pieces for $300,000 in a gallery in some teeny tiny no-where town is so ridiculous. I probably would have preferred him just being a regular carpenter.

You might like Big Stranger's Baby by B.B. Hamel . Honestly, I think the title, precis, and cover were done by someone who didn't read the story because they do not fit the story at all. The romance is actually really sweet. The heroine is the CEO of an energy company and the hero is a coal miner.

Maybe Fix Her Up (Hot & Hammered, #1) by Tessa Bailey ? I have that on my TBR too!

I read the first book in Penny Reid's Winston Brothers series, Truth or Beard (Winston Brothers, #1) by Penny Reid , and I really liked it. The brothers are a little wealthy, but not ridiculously so. They own an autobody shop together.

Sometimes I need a break from the millionaires and the billionaires

Shame that book was disappointing. I didn't hate it, but I feel like it could have been done better. I really didn't feel much between the MCs at all, so it was kind of snooze following them. I'd honestly rather read about Silver and Drew. Never a good sign when the side characters are more interesting than the main characters 😕

Chan | 5093 comments Was it Fix Her Up? I honestly can't remember. I know the woman who was starting her own business had a lot of money, but needed a lot of help and hired a guy to fix up the building that was in a strip mall??? I can't quite remember.

I actually read the 2nd one yesterday...not because I had any burning desire to jump right back into the series, but more because I didn't have a lot of time to look for something else. I didn't have anything else on my short list to read and I didn't want to mess with potential M&G books for next round, and I knew I wouldn't hate it! 😁 I was able to grab it from the library and get it downloaded before I headed out to run errands. I liked the 2nd one better. I don't know that the main storyline that much better really, although it was good to get more background about the Mitchell brothers, but more for the secondary/background characters. A few Fool's Gold characters showed up, and an amazing beagle named Sophie stole the show. It was also a 2-for-1 in terms of romances - the sisters Carol and Violet are both featured. Still not up to Jill Shalvis standards, or even Fool's Gold, but I'll probably keep the rest of the series in mind for times like yesterday when I need something quick and easy to fill a gap and don't have anything better in mind! How's that for a glowing recommendation??? 😂😂

~KarenH~ | 11371 comments I'm reading The Secret (Highlands' Lairds #1) by Julie Garwood from Courtney's shelf. It wasn't even on my shelves, but I have the audio from Audible. As I said above, my shelves (other than 'read') are so neglected! I also found a couple on Liz's shelf that I really want to read, but they were both waitlisted at all the libraries that I have access to, so I put them on hold and added them to my wishlist... 😁

Courtney | 2934 comments Ok, so I'm clicking a bunch of recommendation links off the books, and I come across this one Dating The Player (The Legends, #1) by Erin McCarthy and the precis sounds so familiar. Then I remembered this one Big Player (Size Matters #3) by Blake Wilder , and it's the exact same precis! The one I read came out a few months before that one. Only difference seems to be page count. Do you think it's a penname and was released twice? Or a copy? 🤔

Seems weird it doesn't say "previously released as" or something.

It's a penname...sort of, but I had to hunt a bit to find it. Here's the explanation: https://www.facebook.com/ErinMcCarthy...

I'm assuming she rewrote/fleshed it out and rereleased it, but it seems weird that she'd do that but leave the precis exactly the same!

Oh, I'm pretty much always sleep deprived 🤣🤣 That's just not what caused this particular issue!

It was very weird though, because I would post something and it showed up, but then when I hit refresh it would disappear...that's why all the extra posts - I was testing. Strangest thing was it even messed up edits. I went in to add my completion post to the current completion post since I couldn't get a new post to show (and also added the bit of explanation), and same thing happened - I posted it and the edits were there, but then when I refreshed the edits were gone again. But if I went back into edit mode they showed, so I figured they'd show up sooner or later!

MountainKat | 31763 comments Here is your next task!

Task 5 - 27. Read a minimum of 750 pages in books published in any one year prior to 2018, team picks the year.

As a team select a year prior to 2018 and then read at least 750 pages in books initially published in the selected year. For this task use the initial publication date. If there is a date listed at the top of the editions page - use it! Otherwise, I will be looking for the earliest dated English language edition regardless of format for the qualification. Remember to use the first edition Kindle page count.

message 146: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11371 comments Ok, we picked 2017. I've got a few hours left in the book I'm currently listening to and heading out to run a few errands, so I'll find something when I get home.

message 147: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 2934 comments I was going to look through my shelves for something, but Power Play (Blades Hockey, #1) by Maria Luis came up on the suggested reads of something else I was looking at, and it sounds cute, so I'm going to try that. This is why my TBR never gets smaller!!! 🤣

message 148: by Courtney (last edited Sep 22, 2022 11:01PM) (new)

Courtney | 2934 comments I don't think the person who wrote the precis actually read this book because it is totally not happening the way it says. Charlie is the one who floats the story to her boss...he doesn't make her do it, and there's no deadline to get it done. She meets the hockey player at a bar and then decides convincing him to let her interview him will help her get a job at a better paper 🤷‍♀️. Totally weird.

The book is still ok, just the vibe is totally different from what I was expecting.

Edit: A third of the way in and we finally get the ultimatum from her boss, but it feels weird because the interview was her idea anyway

Although I'm sure Karen will read something with a lot of pages, so Liz and Courtney, you are probably okay with the challenge minimum of 150 pages.
