SOLVED. Short Children’s book with chapters where the children in a class finally get pen pals, but they find them extremely boring. Spoilers ahead. [s]

I read this at school in about 2015 but I suspect it was published a lot earlier — before 2000. It was paperback and I think it had about a hundred pages. I don’t remember the title or the cover. In it, a class of about 25 children begs for pen pals for a long time. Their teacher finally gives in (the teacher’s name may have begun with a W) but the class complain because they find their pen pals very boring - they spend most of their letters asking about what the children have in their homes (televisions, computers etc). Only one child has a normal pen pal. It turns out that the letters were written by an adult who is trying to steal the things in their houses to give to charity.
