Allie | 62 comments While I am here right now, I need a bit of help on this monthly writing contest I do. This month's topic is mythological creature. What is your favorite creature? I might write a story about it.

Dovey's gotten me into dragons lol but you could also merge different creature together to make your own!

Jaedon D Kovacs | 120 comments I don’t really have a favourite, but honestly, you could write about almost any Greek mythological creature lol

DoveyV | 311 comments I’ve always really liked the German folklore which has like faeries and goblins and stuff. There’s a lot of interesting creatures though if you look into it.

Allie | 62 comments For the short story, I ended up with this snow fox thing. I wanted to do something more gory like mermaids and sirens drowning sailors and yokai with gruesome faces but this is supposed to be a 9-16 yr old magazine so maybe not...

Do what makes you happy but that's considerate of you- I guess it's best to be safe though.
I'm sure whatever you do will be super!

Oo! *Insert ghostly oo*
Anyway, tension and suspense is super important for the scare factor.
And plot twists- leave the reader always in mystery so you can shock them and then make them fear stuff by showing them it.
Will they fear for a character's life?
Make that character vulnerable (they can still be strong but a certain vulnerability will work- like a human is vulnerable to a vampire- being human is the 'vulnerability' there, if that makes sense).
Caring on with the vampire example- we need to make it sCaRy.
So, show this through it's past actions, through far fetched tales and myths- they are normally a tad bit disturbing.
Feasting on brains and ripping limbs and all that stuff. So make them fearful, so the reader fears for the character's safety, which may make them scared too. Use gothic devices to further scare your readers.
Moons, wolves, darkness, blood, appartitions and the supernatural and storms are common but not the only examples.
I remember getting scared, when reading a middle grade book, when I was younger and had to look behind my back because I was scared lol, I normally don't scare easily so that was something lol
In short, the main character's were getting chased by a big criminal, in the dark but they weren't sure where he was, that uncertainty, paired with mini me, got me scared.
Sooo, have fun and scare away!
Let me know if you need more help xxx
