The plot follows four (maybe three?) children who all make wishes and they don't turn out how they expected. There are at least two girls, one of whom something happens to her voice. I read this book in 2003 and it seemed like it was a few years old, so maybe mid-90s? Each chapter told the story of a different child effected.
