Jay Holder | 6 comments YA book, slightly dystopian island

I read this book in secondary school in a UK school library around 2005-2011. It was age appropriate YA/teen novel. I think part of a short series of 2-3 books.

First book was set on an island. It had a lot of very strict rules and very string gender roles. Women & girls did knitting and house work. Main character a you g ish girl (name might be Dorothea??) had to knit socks and hated it. She was learning to "turn" the heels on socks. Everything was strict - girls all had plaited hair, and specific summer/winter clothes, male relatives were alliwed to hit women in 'discipline'. They believed women can't swim but our main character learned how in secret - tied an orange rope into her plaited hair to practice safely. It eventually ends with her swimming out to a log (the village collect drift woof off the tide for fuel etc), and sitting on it following the current away.

Second book i think starts with her on thislog. She gets rescued by people on a boat. They think she's a mermaid at first then realise she's a child. She's too thirsty to talk so they think she's mute - she keeps pretending to be mute to avoid being asked questions or sent back. She's smuggled off the boat by some resistance movement- government on mainland are also bad/dangerous- to avoid being interrogated. She discovers there are multiple mainlands/continents abd the name of her own islamd -- they show her pictures. And eventually she agrees to be sent back to another nearby island as a spy or resistance person of some kind.

I remember it super well, just not a tittle or author🤣

Jay Holder | 6 comments This kid had definitely gown up on her island and kbew nothing else.

I think it turns out that the planet is an earth colony - with the landmasses named after the oldest three on earth - one was definitely gondwana and i think the others were pangia and pannotia but not certain
