Rachel | 3524 comments Please post all updates/comments/questions about the Fall 2022 Reading Challenge in this thread. :D

The Fall 2022 Reading Challenge will begin September 1st and end November 30th.

Rules of the challenge:

Read 3 books (or more)
Complete 3 prompts (or more)
Any genre ok
Rereads ok

This fall, complete 3 (or more) of the following:

1. Many talented authors have birthdays this season.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

P. Djeli Clark
Susanna Clarke
Alice Feeney
Amor Towles

2. September is National Service Dog Month.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH THE LETTERS D-O-G IN THE TITLE/SUBTITLE.

OR

READ A BOOK ABOUT A SERVICE DOG.

3. Devil in Ohio is a limited series that will premiere on Netflix on September 2nd. It’s about a young girl who escapes a cult. Her psychiatrist takes her in. Danger ensues.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK THAT FEATURES A CHARACTER LIVING IN (OR HAS ESCAPED FROM) A CULT.

OR

READ A BOOK SET (AT LEAST IN PART) IN OHIO.

4. Do Revenge will premiere on Netflix on September 16. Two teenage girls get revenge on one another’s enemies. It’s inspired by Strangers on a Train.

So this fall,

READ A REVENGE STORY.

OR

READ STRANGERS ON A TRAIN.

5. Nanny is a horror movie that will premiere in theaters on November 23rd.

Aisha is a Senegalese nanny working in New York City. As she prepares to bring her child to America, she is haunted by a violent presence.

The film will have a limited release in theaters before streaming on Prime Video later in the year.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK IN WHICH ONE OF THE CHARACTERS IS A NANNY.

6. Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng will be published on October 4th. It’s the group read.

Bonus Group Read:
Fairy Tale by Stephen King. (September 6th)

So this fall,

READ ONE (OR BOTH OF THE BOOKS) AND DISCUSS IT WITH THE GROUP.

7. Random prompt. This counts towards the challenge but isn’t inspired by the season.

So this fall,

READ A BOOK WITH A NAME IN THE TITLE.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY AUTUMN, EVERYONE! :D

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments Thank you Rachel! I’m such a geek when you release the new challenge, I go through my books and see what fits, make a list. Most the time I get distracted by another book and deviate from the list but I sure love these challenges.

Christine | 798 comments Danell, I geek out too when I see the new challenge!

My husband will be doing more than usual travel for work this fall. I'm hoping that will give me more reading time. I haven't picked any books for the challenge yet but I am loving Franzi's choices!!!!!!

message 12: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I decided to go big and set a higher than normal goal because I hardly read any books for the summer challenge. I also am having a hard time deciding between books for Amor Towles. I've been wanting to read Rules of Civility for a long time and a bunch of my friends just read Lincoln Highway and loved it. The other task that is a character is a nanny. I've wanted to read Mary Poppins for a long time and it counts as a classic which I have a goal of 12 for each year. Th other book is The Nanny Diaries which has set on my shelves unread for years. The universe says read it now, lol. I will read Strangers on a Train and Fairy Tale. The other tasks I'm still thinking about. Another task that is separate from the group is taking down all my books, dusting and reorganizing them, and hopefully get some new shelves. Can you hear my husband sighing? LOL

I’ve heard good things about Amor Towles books but have never read him. I’m thinking it’s finally time to read A Gentleman in Moscow.
You have a great list going-look forward to hearing your thoughts on the titles you decide on.
Good luck with reorganizing your shelves! :)

message 14: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments A Gentleman in Moscow is one of those books that at the beginning, you say, why am I reading this, and by the end you will love it. I am so excited that Ewan MacGregor is playing the gentleman.

Christine | 798 comments I just read I Choose Darkness A Holiday Essay by Jenny Lawson This is a quick read, guaranteed to make you laugh out loud as she explains why she loves Halloween and shares some childhood stories. When I visited my family a month ago, we went to a live performance of Mary Poppins at an outdoor amphitheater located in my hometown. My favorite parts were when Mary Poppins flew over the audience with her umbrella suspended from above. She did this once after intermission and again near the end. Earlier in the performance she was only levitated a short distance on stage. I thought the play got progressively better as it went along.

Too bad it's currently only available on Kindle. I know I'm missing out by not progressing with technology, but I also have plenty of old school material to keep me entertained for a quite a while.

Franzi | 74 comments Hello everyone
A quick check in from me, nearly done with this quarter‘s challenge :-)

1) Alice Feeney - His & Hers - great suspense, loved it

2) DOG - using a German title here as I read the German book , translation of The Bad Daughter by Joy Fielding is called sOlanGe Du atmest , a good read as well

3) book set in Ohio
Mustard Seed by Laila Ibrahim - I love her novels , it’s the second in a series and I’m looking forward to the next one already

4) revenge - Carrie Soto is Back by TJ Reid - TJ Reid does it again, loved this audio lots!

5) nanny - Playing Nice by JP Delaney - looooved this, couldn’t put it down

message 39: by Franzi (new)

Franzi | 74 comments Sorry I’ve had to split my comment up as I cannot read what I type in longer messages on the app.

6) Group reads: I’m currently reading Our Missing Hearts, really really enjoying it.
Im very tempted with Stephen king but I have soooo many books on my TBR pile and don’t want to purchase another. Our library usually doesn’t have brand new things so I’ll try and read it asap but probably not this quarter

7) Mademoiselle Edith - Christine Girard
A very interesting read about singer Edith Piaf who was already famous in France and then tried to become a star in the US too.

My reading will be quieting down quite a bit over the next few months as I’m starting work again in November. I am really excited but we’ll have to find new routines as a family and I think that’ll take some time.
I’ll definitely be checking in every now and again though and look forward to the winter challenge gr, I’m sure I’ll manage to read during the Christmas break :)
Take care everyone

Thanks for all the updates, Franzi! :D

Glad to hear good things about Our Missing Hearts. I’m looking forward to reading it when it becomes available from the library.
I’ll have to check out Playing Nice-sounds like a fun page turner. Thanks for the recommendation!

Wishing you all the best on your return to work. Hope you will check in when you have time even just to say hi and let us know how you’re doing. :)

Rachel | 3524 comments Just a quick note on the group reads-

I really enjoy including them in the challenge and lately have a hard time just picking one. That said, I don’t want anyone to feel pressure to read them all. I just like providing choices and there’s so many good books. Anyway, just wanted to put that out there. Happy Reading!

message 42: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments It’s a little quiet in this thread.

I’m in a little bit of a reading slump-still able to read but definitely taking my time and not reading as much or as fast as usual. Not that I’m a fast reader but it’s taking me longer than normal to finish anything. Not sure if it’s the books or my mood. I’m currently reading Our Missing Hearts and while I think it’s a good story I’m finding it slow in parts.

How’s everyone doing? Please check in when you get a chance.

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments I had a stack of spooky books I wanted to read but feel the same. Damn slumps.

Christine | 798 comments I'm in the "damn slumps" too. The good news is there is still a week to get in a couple more spooky books before Halloween. I'm starting Fairy Tale today.

I did listen to Ready Player Two (Ready Player One, #2) by Ernest Cline . It is set in Ohio. Will Wheaton is my favorite narrator when it comes to sci-fi. He has the best kind of snark to add to the story. Love the references to John Hughes movies which I love.

Rachel | 3524 comments Finished Our Missing Hearts.

I thought the book had its moments but I was disappointed I didn’t enjoy it more. Much of the story is recounting past events-I would have preferred a dual time line where we can really experience the past as the characters are experiencing it. I thought that would have been more impactful rather than recounting it after the fact. The pace of the book is often slow but the story felt very realistic which is scary.

Oh, in another unpopular opinion, I put down Fairy Tale-it wasn’t for me.

Hope those that read these books enjoy them. Both are getting many favorable reviews. Always look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
Fairy Tale by Stephen King
