First Quarter - (view spoiler)[I had wondered whether to reread the first book before starting this one but the first chapter, featuring sisters Briony and Innes brought the plot quickly back to me. To Innes, her own sister is her biggest enemy but the reader, with access to Briony’s thoughts, is allowed to feel differently, which makes the opposing sides they now take hard to read about.

Isobel’s perspective came next and it remained one of my favourites as she had first-hand dealings with Reid and a lot of information was gathered there. She can be mean and hard to get close to but is such an intriguing figure.

Alistair and Hendry were also my favourite early chapters to read about as I love reading sibling relationships where they are still aligned, unlike Innes and Briony, even if it does come after the murder of their other family members and the reveal about Hendry's condition.

This modern sort of magic system wasn’t my favourite to read about, in the first series instalment, but I enjoyed the introduction to the different families and the tournament and look forward to learning about how it can abolished here. This whole first quarter of the first quarter (if that makes sense) has been primarily focused on a reindroducing to the characters and the events occurring in and immediately following book one. Reid becoming a champion is where the book felt like it truly began, over 60 pages into it. (hide spoiler)]

Second Quarter - (view spoiler)[Pacing has picked up and I’m really invested in the story, now the two sides have been established. I wish this had more tournament content, even though I’m liking the political and magical aspects.

Gavin’s story of the first Grieve was interesting and bonded me with him. I actually feel bonded to most of them now, even though their goals are opposing and I fear most may die at the end of this. Isobel however super shocked me with her decision to kill the others in their sleep. I still like her and hope she can become the opposite of the monster everyone thinks she is and she sometimes seems determined to become.

Another super interesting reveal was how Hendry could be Gavin’s saviour! Makes sense but I still didn’t see it coming. (hide spoiler)]

Third Quarter - (view spoiler)[The wider world is learning about the truth, due to the champion’s interviews with the media. The excerpts that begin each chapter have been interesting throughout but now they illuminate how the public are siding with the champions, empathise with what they were born into, and back their attempts to end it.

I’m so rooting for Gavin and Alistair to become a thing but also for sweet Hendry to be saved! (hide spoiler)]

Fourth Quarter - (view spoiler)[I really loved how each of the characters were exposed as being so much more than the monsters they saw themselves as or their families attempted to mould them into. They all had softer and sweeter sides and all vied to do good, eventually. It made it easy to root for all of their survival. I think I cheered out loud when the blood veil eventually fell but I knew the book wouldn’t end happily.

Briony’s death was super sad to read about. I would have been sad to read about any of them dying, as the author gave a solid reason for the reader to root for all of them. (hide spoiler)]

I found it quite initially slow too. It did do a good job of getting the reader up to date before introducing any new elements though.

I agree the book feels like it starts out a little late, i think it may have meant to be a book that can be read alone considering they tell almost everything that happened in the first book in only the first three or four chapters..

I think many authors are conscious that some won't reread a book before a subsequent story is released and are more attuned to trying to give a bit of a summary.

What worries me is the inner thoughts of the characters - isobel planning to murder them all in their sleep, gavin plottong to kill alistair and his brother.
