Do you remember the age group? Is it more a picture book or chapter book?
Found: The Dragon's Apprentice by Linda McNabb
They told me they can remember they read it around 2005-2008.
There's dragons, the plot centres around a dragon being kept as a prisoner and having it's scales removed and sold/used for special healing properties that's slowly killing the dragon. Boy who works in the castle breaks the dragon free and they go an adventure.
I'm fairly certain the same author has several other dragon-themed books in the children's fiction genre with red, silver and gold dragons, and whenever the dragons speak it uses italics instead of speech marks.
Its set in its own distanct fantasy setting.
The cover was mostly blue/purple.
Author could be a New Zealand Woman.
