It's described as an "American Story of O" - I'm not sure if that's correct, but you can definitely see the influence of Story of O.
The book is about life in a 'pornutopia' - they acknowledge that in the book itself, Carrie is intelligent, and she has her own agency while choosing to go into a life-style slave relationship.
Abigail Barnette's 'The Boss' is a fantastic (first) novel in the BDSM scene, and even more brilliant - the Kindle version is free! I'd definitely recommend it, especially if 'Story of O' turned you off and you want to see a strong, independent woman explore her sexuality in a safe, sane, consensual BDSM relationship :) Plus I think her exploration of other themes and their relationship outside the BDSM activities is really interesting and realistic. Despite having the ubiquitous billionaire boyfriend.
