Some children’s/middle-grade book, possibly a series, with dragons I believe. Boy gets captured by powerful people who capture people (kids mainly?) to work in mines or caves, but make them drink a potion at first so they lose their memories. Boy pretends to drink it, then acts as if he’s lost his memory. Overseers with whips? Read around 2003-2005. I think there were black-and-white illustrations.
