SOLVED. Older Sci Fi novel with a boy, large bug-like robots. [s]

i read this 10+ years ago but im certain it's decades older. i don't remember a ton of plot, but i remember that there were large robots, white or silver, that had four really tall legs. a boy and a couple companions are trying to run from them on foot, i don't think the parents were there. not a super technology based society. i believe the robots would implant something in your head if you were caught. sorry i don't remember much more detail than that, but i can try to answer questions!

A bit of a long shot but some aspects match - is this The White Mountains, which is the first book of The Tripods Trilogy? Obviously the 'robots' have 3 legs, but the age of the book, the boy and 2 or 3 companions, the lack of technology (among the humans anyway) and the head implant all make sense.
