Hilary Mortz | 7 comments I am a clueless newbie and am just wondering is it 'done' to add your own books to your book shelf? I didnt quite like to rate it...

message 2: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 80 comments I've added mine, Hilary, in order to easily see if someone else has added my books. I haven't rated it though, as that feels like bad form to me, and quite naturally I'd rate all my books 5*.

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) If you're going to rate your own books, you better give them five stars!

I have my shelves as well, but unrated. The shelf is called I wrote this.

Hilary Mortz | 7 comments Thanks for your advice guys. You're all so nice. I wasn't aware I could create my own shelf - that's my next task then (I'm supposed to be researching and editing today!). To be honest I really only wanted to shelf my books so I can add them to a list. Really appreciate your comments. Hx

Emma Jaye | 164 comments I add my books, but with no ratings, no reviews, simply so when I go on someone else's profile, I can click 'compare books' and see if the other person has ever considered my work.

Jim Vuksic | 1227 comments I agree with Henry. An oft-quoted business adage pertaining to management performance supports his recommendations. "Your work speaks for itself. Don't interrupt".

message 7: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (theresa99) | 535 comments I think Jim and Henry have good valid points. My book is claimed through my author profile. I have not rated or reviewed my own work.

message 8: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) Eh, I see no harm in shelving them. To each her own. :)

message 9: by Hilary (new)

Hilary Mortz | 7 comments I have shelved the books but not rated or reviewed them and put them on a couple of genre related lists. Agree that it would be self defeating to leave comments. Thanks for replies - very helpful.

I put my own books on my own shelves, and on the shelves of groups I belong to where it's allowed. Nothing wrong with a little marketing effort. However, I don't rate my own books, and I think it's fairly disingenuous when an author does so.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 242 comments I put my books on a shelf called my_books simply so I could add them to a Smashwords list. I emphatically DO NOT rate or review them because I don't see the point. Of course I'm going to give them all 5 stars and, in my humble opinion, all that does is artifically inflate the ratings. It's up to the readers to rate my work if they wish to do so.

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) Point taken, Henry.
