Ed's suggestion of Pure by Andrew Miller looks very promising. The book opens in the Palace of Versailles (where a young engineer sits waiting).

MAYBE The Pillars of the Earth or its sequel. It's allll about church building.

(Glad you're not cold anymore. Donuts are much better.)

According to Jack's profile, he only joined Goodreads in February of this year, has never posted any books to his shelves and has no activity on the site except for joining this group and asking this question, and last logged on to Goodreads back in March. I'm seriously wondering if he's lost interest in both the question and in Goodreads itself. :-(
I agree with Ed and Kris; moving to Solved. Here's a good review of the book that explains all:

Its set I think in 18th century France, about an architect working on a church / gravediggers ... very atmospheric, protagonist lives with host family with a weird daughter. First and last scene I remember being set in Versaille where he is commissioned i think
Any help thanks !!!
