In both instances they created a seclusive world of their own, away from their bourgeois middle class realities. Into this world, they invite an outsider they deemed worthy (Mihaley & Matthew) to share in their intellectual discourses and dramatic play-acting. They showcase general disdain for the structure of society around them, instead dreaming of ideal utopias - religion, occult, death and marxism. But like most “dreamers”, rather than being proactive, they indulge in escapism - a rebellion that has no real effect on anyone but themselves. I wonder if one served as inspiration for the other.

Having just finished Journey by Moonlight and being aware of The Dreamers (and Gilbert Adair's source novel) I do see the similarity between the respective characters (as you mentioned). I'm not sure if Adair was aware of Szerb's book, but it would not surprise me at all if he knew it well and had imbibed it and perhaps been subconsciously influenced by it?
