So many writers find out the hard way that while they are great at novels, and even novellas, they have no real talent for short stories. Likewise, many short story writers who are masters of this literary form do not have a feel for longer-form writing. Some (Muriel Spark for instance) extend from short stories into novellas, but nothing longer. And some authors stick to publishing short stories. No one is policing these prompts, so no one will complain if you pick someone like Millhauser who wrote a couple short novels, but mostly writes short stories, or even someone like JG Ballard, whose short stories are quite different from his novels, with equal numbers of both. But, when you find authors who are actually REALLY good at writing them, short stories are great even if you almost never have read them except in school so far.
I almost chose an anthology collection of short stories for this one, though it would not quite fit the prompt (and it seems a bit sad if I am not following prompts I wrote in the first place). Instead I chose a collection of stories by one of the great female short story writers, Alice Munro.
Selected Stories by Alice Munro

She wrote essays, short stories, poetry, plays and screenplays, but no novels.

It's an excellent anthology which really made me think and feel, and my blog is Just Katherine on Wordpress.com.

This past week or so I finished
Strange Pilgrims by Gabriel García Márquez. A couple of stories in, I realized I had read this book when first published in English. Definitely a case of life experience has taught me a knew appreciation of the stories.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez could write a good story, but his novel One Thousand Years of Solitude is supposed be a world masterpiece. I hope to someday wrap my brain around the text.

Lynnette | 324 comments I read this one-Love in Color: Mythical Tales from Around the World, Retold- it was a retelling of common tales, some I recognized others I didn't, but all were great. Retold from a Nigerian lens (I'm fairly certain). She even includes the love story of her parents. Very well done.
