A Fantasy book I read back in 2006 but didn't finish, Genre Fantasy

Looking for a novel, starts with 3 knights guarding a forest with giant wall in the horizon, 2 of the get killed by surprise enemy attack and last knights runs off gets tired and hides behind large tree, a hermit/dwarf from under the tree helps him escape but they end up in an enemy castle and captured by the princess who enjoys toturing, knight is put in a cell and given a female slave for the night prior to the toture that entails, but some blinding lights guide him and help him escape
