Well, Kevin, my friends and I are rooting for Hungry Ghosts. What a novel you wrote!

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments I think Owen might have called it - it’s probably a wind up.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments I am quite proud of that call - it rang a bell as I read her debut. Kicking myself now for choosing not to get an ARC of this one.

You were right - it was a wind up meant to be her

Sadly I had to Google her as never heard of her.

I wonder if Feeney's new novel is as stylistically innovative as her debut. It sounds like the debut was a mix of styles (prose, poetry).

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Yes please. I am in a meeting tomorrow so miss the fun. Having decried the midnight announcement it’s actually more practical if you work.

switterbug (Betsey) (goodreadscomswitterbug) | 50 comments I just knew Paul Harding would make it!

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments That’s brilliant on both.
And the Esi Edugyan blurb (whoever spotted that) worked.

Ruben | 436 comments that's 4 men already and just 1 woman... I loved In Ascension, very happy for that! Enjoyed This Other Eden, but it hasn't stayed with me...

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments All very white authors also so far - us/uk/Ireland and possibly Canada (living in Scotland)

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Given one of the judges comments at the coronation on the Riyal family I would hope the list starts getting a little more (ideally quite a lot more) diverse

James Pomar | 115 comments I think he had said Bernstein is just a rumor at this point, right?

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Yes hence the possibly in my country listing.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments And that was the 13 hundredth comment on this thread.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Any news on more diverse authors Derek - feels very white, male currently.

David | 3885 comments Over 100 comments in the last hour. I have to say, it's a lot of fun when the leaks come in.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments I need some new leaks as I have my dog photos prepared for all the ones so far.

message 1280: by Ruben (new)

Ruben | 436 comments Over 100 comments, but all the intel coming from just a single source, who has been drip feeding us unconfirmed rumours without source or reference...but indeed, great fun :)

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Ohhhhhhh what could that be I wonder

James Pomar | 115 comments Derek wrote: "Hopefully tomorrow we’ll see some more diversity. People are being quite tight lipped but apparently the ‘controversy’ will be that there’s a short story collection on the long list."

My guess is the late Americans

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Ruben wrote: "Over 100 comments, but all the intel coming from just a single source, who has been drip feeding us unconfirmed rumours without source or reference...but indeed, great fun :)"

Derek’s last minute rumours have proved very accurate in last years although never as detailed as this.

message 1284: by Laura (new)

Laura (lauramulcahy) | 122 comments I’m guessing Taylor too. I know there was some debate over whether The Late Americans is a novel or a short story collection.

Cindy Haiken | 1913 comments Derek wrote: "Only one novel from Faber made the list apparently."

Derek, you seem to have significant "rumor" sources. I have to say these tidbits are a bit painful!

message 1286: by Ruben (new)

Ruben | 436 comments What do the rules say about short stories? I understood back when Sophie Ward was longlisted that interconnected short stories are ok as it could be seen as full-length novel? Presumably a real short story collection wouldn't even be submitted...

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments I thought that but I struggle to see the debate as it’s for me much more a novel just told from different points of view than a short story collection . Much clearer cut eligiblity than All That Man Is say.

message 1288: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Jared Hosein (kjaredhosein) | 18 comments Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer wrote: "Given one of the judges comments at the coronation on the Riyal family I would hope the list starts getting a little more (ideally quite a lot more) diverse

Rushdie will be the diversity.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments It has to be long firm and “unified and substantial”

I see no concern at all for Taylor’s book there

message 1290: by But_i_thought_ (new)

But_i_thought_ (but_i_thought) | 257 comments Falling Animals also reads like an interconnected short story collection (each chapter introduces and follows a new character). Would also tick the Irish box.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments True although again (and I literally just finished it) it’s clearly unified and substantial so would be a false controversy I think.

All That Man Is was clearly marketed by its publisher as short stories which is why it was a strange choice.

Owen | 72 comments Reckon it’s too late to change my prediction list? I think, given another shot, I could really nail it now

message 1296: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Haiken | 1913 comments I have now fully caught up on all the comments I've somehow missed in the past few hours. I stand by my comments that the longlist suffers without DC on it. Delighted if Bee Sting is on it as I am a big Paul Murray fan and I thought Old God's Time was brutal but quite good. I am decidedly NOT a fan of Brandon Taylor.

message 1297: by Ben (new)

Ben | 215 comments David wrote: "Just give in, Ben. This is like Christmas eve."

But I feel like I'm opening half my presents before Santa has even been down the chimney!

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments That’s got to be there.

message 1299: by James (new)

James Pomar | 115 comments Ben, we haven’t had this much fun since the guardian leaked the entire longlist the night before. Just jump in

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10120 comments Ben - think if it though. As it stands you would normally open all your presents between 9am and 901 am. This is spreading it out over hours with half of the presents still to come.
