I am quite proud of that call - it rang a bell as I read her debut. Kicking myself now for choosing not to get an ARC of this one.

Surprisingly, the three Irish authors have the same agent: Peter Strauss from RCW literary agency.

It sounds like the debut was a mix of styles (prose, poetry).

I’m guessing Taylor too. I know there was some debate over whether The Late Americans is a novel or a short story collection.

What do the rules say about short stories? I understood back when Sophie Ward was longlisted that interconnected short stories are ok as it could be seen as full-length novel? Presumably a real short story collection wouldn't even be submitted...
I thought that but I struggle to see the debate as it’s for me much more a novel just told from different points of view than a short story collection . Much clearer cut eligiblity than All That Man Is say.

Falling Animals also reads like an interconnected short story collection (each chapter introduces and follows a new character). Would also tick the Irish box.
True although again (and I literally just finished it) it’s clearly unified and substantial so would be a false controversy I think. All That Man Is was clearly marketed by its publisher as short stories which is why it was a strange choice.
Could be something a bit less clear cut... Jonathan Escoffery perhaps?

I have now fully caught up on all the comments I've somehow missed in the past few hours. I stand by my comments that the longlist suffers without DC on it. Delighted if Bee Sting is on it as I am a big Paul Murray fan and I thought Old God's Time was brutal but quite good. I am decidedly NOT a fan of Brandon Taylor.

Ben - think if it though. As it stands you would normally open all your presents between 9am and 901 am. This is spreading it out over hours with half of the presents still to come.
