2005 (I think) Fantasy novel starts with wizard joining a traveling theater troop

I started this book in a bookstore and never finished it, I would love to! I think it was in 2005 and possibly a new book at that time.
it started with a wizard in trouble joining a group of strolling traveling players theater troop. it was set in a fantasy or Middle Ages time.
