While she was a college student, Laurel Estabrook was savagely attacked one morning during a bike ride. The two men who committed the crime were eventually sent to prison and Laurel picked up the pieces of her life and earned her degree as a social worker. As a volunteer at a Vermont homeless shelter she meets elderly Bobby Crocker, a charming man who has suffered debilitating mental illness in the past but who quickly becomes a favorite of Laurel's as they both share a love of photography. After Bobby's death, a treasure trove of old photographs are found and Laurel becomes obsessed with the story they seem to tell. Many are pictures of famous people from past decades but the ones that intrigue Laurel are those that show scenery and buildings that are familiar to her. Laurel begins to follow the trail of Bobby's photographs becoming totally enmeshed in them to the detriment of all her relationships and her own well being. Friends become concerned but Laurel is on a mission.
I am a fan of Bohjalian's books and have been for quite a few years. At first I was not enjoying this one too much but eventually it became very interesting and the ending was quite good.
