I think I remember being a little disappointed by the ending of this book, and that the beginning and middle were more interesting than the conclusion, but I can't remember the full plot or title or ending. It had a historical/scientific/otherworldly feeling to it, possibly religious connotations, and I think the protagonist was female. I believe the characters were scientists or researchers and that an army faction was involved. I distinctly remember being creeped out by the description of the "legs" of this giant machine looking like they were built wrong, and I think the machine may have turned out to be a weapon, but I don't recall. I think the machine may also have appeared female. The book may have had a turquoise and brown/gold cover. Any help is appreciated!
