This book probably came out around 2002-2006.
If I remember correctly, its set in the future after America has become a theocracy, run by a very conservative set of evangelical christians. Several traveling preachers travel the country and claim to be Jesus but there are rumors of a prophet that pops up and performs a miracle and then disappears. Eventually this person is tracked down and is hispanic. His mother is named Maria.
This jesus is pursued by the state and is eventually killed. Years later the televangelist couple that most persecuted him comes to believe he was actually Christ returned.
