What do you mean by "E fiction?"Is this book for kids, teens, or adults?
Sorry for the confusion - book is for kids, and one of our colleagues found the title, 'The Wise Old Woman' by Yoshiko Uchida. I was typing directly from staff member, and the book was labelled as 'E fiction'. I will update the header.

Fiction or Fairy tale - set in Asia - maybe China
- the emperor decides that all old people have to go - the main character hides his mother and then, a neighboring empire invades and they say we wont overtake if you can answer 3 questions - one of the questions was how do you thread a string to the center of a log. the solution is to tie the string to an ant who will eat through the log pulling the string through.
Patron read book in the 1990s.
