Juvenile fiction book told from viewpoint of boy in class who befriends a new girl who writes poetry and becomes the classroom poet laureate with the pseudonym Ruby Dubb. She's described as having limeade colored eyes. Her father is a maintenance man/groundskeeper with some type of PTSD. At some point, there is a school costume contest where one of the boys friends comes dressed as General Patton, complete with bulldogs, but one of the dogs nips someone and the boy has to take them back home.

Probably written around the late 80s/early 90s.
