The Croning by Laird Barron
The 16th sounds good. And we'll be here to help eleven. Is laird Barron a more poetic writer? If so, I may need help myself....lol.

I've read one of his collections and a novella and loved them both so much, I bought a couple of more collections and The Croning.
I would say that his writing is...dense. There is a lot packed into a sentence and if you read too fast, you might miss a lot. That's just my opinion. :)
I concur with my esteemed colleague.
Barron's writing requires a certain amount of attention that a lot of genre writing doesn't.
The 16th works for me.

Join me in. I read the book a few weeks ago and will be happy to reread it next month. And you do have to think and keep track of things throughout his works. Small details become very important later on.

Char, I was gonna use the same word - dense. His work is not meant to be skimmed. His short stories read like novels. The only other two authors I can think of for comparison is Lovecraft and Clive Barker.

That's a good comparison-Lovecraft and Barker. I agree.
I think we're going to have a good time with this.
This has a really lovecraftian feel to it. Usually, I would hate this but Laird has a way of enticing me with his words and descriptions I can actually visualize. I love it! Sort of has a GOT vibe too which is a plus!
Yes, I meant Game of Thrones:) And not too much of a head start. I thought I was reading a lot and then I look at the % and I'm only 10% in. This is gonna be a lengthy read! But it seems so worth it.
Whoops! Forgot we ain't starting til third week of March. Sorry guys! Have so many reads going on. I'll stop cause now I can read Kin instead.
I started a week early but I'm only on chapter 2. I was pleasantly surprised at the first chapter. I had no idea!
I think I will start this weekend since I'll be on a short vacation with plenty of downtime. This is my first Laird Barron read but I also have The Light Is The Darkness and want to tackle that one soon too.

Whoa... A Laird Barron story with a Game of Thrones vibe? I actually have this book already but haven't gotten around to it yet. I loved The Imago Sequence and I love Game of Thrones. I may have to jump in on this.

Hey! I'm just a little ways into the book, but I am loving the vibe. It is really creeping me out. Will not be reading this one directly before bed. This has at it's base one of my very favorite fairy tales.

Thanks Charlene. I could get just as excited about a bunch of the other group reads/buddy reads - this group is killing it this month! I already did Broken Monsters and if I had time to squeeze in that many books in such a short period I'd also jump in on Patient Zero, House of Leaves, Blindsight, and maybe Koko (which I've read already, but a long time ago).

LOL Welcome to HA, Andy! There's no reason your TO Be Read pile shouldn't be as big as everyone else's here. :)
Today's the day, peoples! I'm 10% shy of finishing what I'm reading now, (The Little Stranger), and then I will be starting The Croning. Possibly tonight, latest tomorrow!Jori and Andy, I've added you to the official roster above. I hope you both will be reading with us. :)
Thanks for adding me Charlene. I've been reading another book with another group and I still have a big chunk of that to go, but hopefully by later this week I'll be on to this one. Looking forward to it (save me some cookies)!
