The Croning by Laird Barron

I'm not sure I would call him poetic. I've read one of his collections and a novella and loved them both so much, I bought a couple of more collections and The Croning.
I would say that his writing is...dense. There is a lot packed into a sentence and if you read too fast, you might miss a lot. That's just my opinion. :)
I concur with my esteemed colleague.
Barron's writing requires a certain amount of attention that a lot of genre writing doesn't.
The 16th works for me.

And you do have to think and keep track of things throughout his works. Small details become very important later on.

Char, I was gonna use the same word - dense. His work is not meant to be skimmed. His short stories read like novels. The only other two authors I can think of for comparison is Lovecraft and Clive Barker.

That's a good comparison-Lovecraft and Barker. I agree.
I think we're going to have a good time with this.

I started a week early but I'm only on chapter 2. I was pleasantly surprised at the first chapter. I had no idea!

Whoa... A Laird Barron story with a Game of Thrones vibe? I actually have this book already but haven't gotten around to it yet. I loved The Imago Sequence and I love Game of Thrones. I may have to jump in on this.

I like your enthusiasm, Andy! :)

Thanks Charlene. I could get just as excited about a bunch of the other group reads/buddy reads - this group is killing it this month! I already did Broken Monsters and if I had time to squeeze in that many books in such a short period I'd also jump in on Patient Zero, House of Leaves, Blindsight, and maybe Koko (which I've read already, but a long time ago).

LOL Welcome to HA, Andy! There's no reason your TO Be Read pile shouldn't be as big as everyone else's here. :)

Jori and Andy, I've added you to the official roster above. I hope you both will be reading with us. :)
Thanks for adding me Charlene. I've been reading another book with another group and I still have a big chunk of that to go, but hopefully by later this week I'll be on to this one. Looking forward to it (save me some cookies)!
