The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) is one of the masterpieces of Italian literature, together with The Divine Comedy (La Divina Comedia) by Dante Alighieri, Orlando Furioso by Ariosto, and a few others.

As it is a long book (over 500 pages), the moderators have decided to dedicate two months (July and August) to read this book, so that most of those who decide to read it may have an opportunity to finish. Therefore, the next voting will take place in mid-August, to choose the book for September.

Kerstin | 109 comments Oh great! I've been wanting to read this, and squeezing it into one month seemed a little ambitious. :-)

Kerstin | 109 comments Not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here.
Joseph Pearce wrote a commentary on the novel a while back, "The Betrothed": The Greatest Novel Ever Written? I know I read it at the time, but I don't remember a lick of it. The very same article also appeared under his "... in a Nutshell" series at Crisis Magazine.
I am sure Joseph Pearce needs no introduction for many here. For those unfamiliar, among other things he lectures and writes about literature and literary figures from a Catholic perspective.
I'll wait to reread the article until after I finish. However, I thought I'd post the link.

Fonch | 2443 comments Not, He does not need an introduction. Pearce is my hero 😍.

Fonch | 2443 comments Pearce is my favorite writer with Juan Manuel de Prada, the Professor Manuel Alfonseca, and of course G.K. Chesterton.

SUSAN | 87 comments My two favorites have been mentioned, Joseph Pearce and Anthony Esolen. Both reviewed this book.

Fonch | 2443 comments I cheer up that at Last i had found something who was of my guild the historians. The history is learnt at least in my case reading historical novels and after discovering their mistakes. It is very recommended to read a book with comments of an expert in the book. We must think that this book was written in the 19th century after the Napeolonic Wars with the italian confederation until the italian unification in 1870 for this reason the view of the Habsbourg Will be negative because Austria avoided the Italian Unification.
