Boy’s school has a suicide epidemic. After drinking from a well that a mysterious guy tells him to drink from, he can now see chains and ropes attached to people and can also see the underlings of someone (Molluck?) and can see beings known as guardians(?). Also people who have been saved (don’t remember the terminology from the book) have lights and no ropes or chains.
He can see the light coming from his ex’s stomach when she is pregnant.
It’s the first of a three part series, the second’s focus is on the occult. Have yet to read the third.
Maybe written around 10 years ago? I read it in the past few years.
